Where to go birding in mid July in Europe?

Hi! Also, I guess following the river Rhine from Düsseldorf more or less to the North should get you to some birding areas; i.e. around Xanten, Bislich, etc. for waterfowl, waders and what not. I have made the experience that if you´re travelling along the shores of the southern North Sea...

Peregrines called "hawks" in a book

Or that the author himself would like to leave - or come and go - as the peregrines are able to do.

Peregrines called "hawks" in a book

Hi! I think he´s referring to a metaphysical non-human freedom; a freedom that only creatures are able to possses, that lack the ability of human thought (and therefore also lack the capability of having a concept of freedom or anything at all). But that´s just my vague interpretation. I never...

Peregrines called "hawks" in a book

Hi! You think his writing is imperfect? Are you referring to his skill? I guess at the end of the day it´s a matter of taste. What I do know is that I´ve never read a book like that. It left a deep impression on me in any case.

Willow Tit song, Warsaw, 25 Feb

Definetaly the call, but I could assume they can manage to mimick the song of some kind as well. Try to get a look at the bird!

ID help - Poland/Ukraine border, Carpathians

Hi there! I definitely see a passerine here, and the first thought that popped up in my head was "flycatcher", maybe Pied or Semicollared, but then the upper head colours don´t fit (which should be black and not - as in this case - white). Fabian

    Mallorca 2023

Hi! I also made the experience that the Merlin app is quite accurate. I think it has trouble with birds that are only calling from far away, but that might have something to do with the microphone on my cellphone. That app can´t distiniguish between birds that mimick others and the bird that´s...

ID help - Dachau, Germany - II

Hi Mihir! 1 & 2 = I think so yes. Short-toed Treecreepers do look a lot like Eurasian Treecreepers, only their calls and song are different. But yes, looks like Short-toed Treecreeper. 3 & 4 = No. Marsh tit (Poecile palustris). 5 = Yes. 6 = Yes. Cheers, Fabian

    Mallorca 2023

To my ears Marsh Warblers sound a little fiercer than the bird in question, which sounds a little tame; but a Marsh Warbler´s subsong could be the reason for that. I have to check and listen to some of these...

    Mallorca 2023

Hi everyone! I also listened to the song of that mysterious warbler quiet a few times now and I also think it´s not a Iduna opaca, which sounds a little faster to my ears. Hippolais languida is way quirkier and faster as well, and has some repetitions in its song, which that mysterious one...

Thanks for sharing all your experiences, thoughts and ideas! Long-eared Owl or a Short-eared Owl could actually kill a sleeping Sparrowhawk, I suppose; since they´re able to fly over vast waters they seem to be the two culprits, yes.

Hey! Good question. We have some Peregrines around where I´m from but I´ve never witnessed them defecating anything else than white feces. So, I don´t know. Gotta try to find something written about it... - Fabian

Hi Paul, thanks for sharing your latest experience! Do you have a suspect concerning the killing of the Sparrowhawks? If it wasn´t for the large owl pellet, I´d like to think of a Peregrine falcon as a suspect. So, what do you think? Could it have been an Eagle Owl? - Fabian
