    Not Tapioca pudding

My wife has been fascinated by some weird structures that have been appearing overnight in fields all month and wondered what they are. From a distance it could be animal vomit, then on closer inspection it looks as if clusters of eggs have been deposited up the grass stems. It starts off...

    Mono vs. Bino?

Yes it certainly can, after a bit of practice. Some find a monocular causes eye strain after a while. Most people can avoid this once they know the secret is to keep both eyes open. Positioning a hand to block the forward view of the unaided eye can help with this.

Monocular to pocket binocular migration fail

Good to hear from other monocular users. I was very tempted with the DBA VHD model, the only dilemma for me was that the next model down in the 8x42 range, the BGA, was quite a bit smaller. I wouldn't have that hard choice today as according to the Opticron website, they have discontinued the...

Monocular to pocket binocular migration fail

Eventually I decided to stay with an optic that fits in my pocket. That way it would always be with me without having to remember to pick up something extra when I go out each morning. While I can get 8 x 32 binoculars into my winter jacket, they are too tight for what I wear in warmer months...

Monocular to pocket binocular migration fail

Those Rick Young harnesses look very good indeed. Back in September I considered the various options for a few weeks before spending any money. Instead of commenting on my choice straight away, I thought it better to give it a while and get a bit of practical experience first. That is now...

Monocular to pocket binocular migration fail

As good as the Zeiss Victory pockets are, I had to admit defeat in the end, even though TryZeiss kindly extended the trial period for several extra days. Thanks for all the suggestions. Alas larger binoculars are not really suitable for walking the fields each morning, watching nature always...

Monocular to pocket binocular migration fail

Mike, thanks for the encouragement. I think you are right, lapwings in flight may have been a bad choice for me. I am about to go out with the VP again and should have no problem finding something less exciting this time.

Monocular to pocket binocular migration fail

Just as I was thinking watching birds doesn't get any better than this... it didn't. A feeling of nausea came over me and my eyes felt terrible. The binoculars had to go back into the case. I felt as sick as when I attempt to read in a car. Something is not right. I do not doubt for a minute...

Monocular to pocket binocular migration fail

It is over 10 years since my Opticron binoculars were stolen. Since then, almost all my assisted viewing has been done with one eye. Whatever jacket I am wearing, I slip a second hand 7x24 Leica rangefinder into the pocket and that has been fantastic, not bad glass and always there. I came...

    Ethical optics brands

Mono, sorry if my comments came across as a dig at people who are vegans. That was not my intention, I have friends who are also vegans and we all respect our choices ( The anti-meat aspect is in that debate, not the written report). I think tolerance of other peoples informed choices is a...

    Ethical optics brands

I must have had too much free time on my hands today as I listened to the entire "Should we care who makes our binoculars" debate in that report. The distinct impression I came away with is that a small minority of people are not content to simply decide for themselves which binoculars to use...

    BBC Radio

Arthur, I was streaming BBC Radio 4 just before reading this. It dropped out twice in 20 minutes, something that seems to be happening more frequently these last few weeks. Sometimes it recovers after a minute or so, on other occasions I have to restart the app on my phone. At first I thought...

    I feel a bit of a fraud

At first I only signed up to see a few pictures, now I find myself reading a wide variety of items from different sections almost every day. Really nice to see such an active and friendly forum. Thanks for letting me stay !

    I feel a bit of a fraud

Hello from Shropshire - though I do feel a bit of a fraud joining this excellent forum. Probably best I make a few confessions from the outset so you can decide if my membership should be terminated sooner rather than later ... The thing is I will never qualify as a a proper birder. I don't...
