Next step: I need a scope

hello! I've not been on the forums in a while, so this reply is a bit late. I went with the Opticron MM4/60 because (1) is it easily taken on a hike, (2) is inexpensive, and (3) can be used with a smaller, lightweight tripod. My GF and I do not use the scope much, so a budget choice was...

Too many camera options, don't know what any of it means. Suggest a camera you know works?

A bridge camera, or even some of the P&S superzooms are pretty good. Just be sure to get something with an actual view finder so you don't need to use the rear screen -- its really awkward trying to hold the camera at arm length and track a bird or find something at high magnification. I agree...

    A question about gallery rules.

Tired, You might try posting in https://www.birdforum.net/forums/site-notice-board.629/ about the gallery. The gallery guidelines are here: https://www.birdforum.net/help/gallery-guidelines/ The guidelines do say "free-roaming" and also provide a link to ask a moderator. Marc

cannot decide between EL 8x32 and EL 8.5x42 - thoughts please?

I have the EL FP 8.5x42. It's my favorite. If I had to have only one, this would be it. I've not used the EL 8x32. I use the Kowa Genesis 8x33 a lot when I have camera gear. I really like it, but as I said, I'd pick the 8.5x42 over it if I had to pick one.

    How many stilts are there?

With all the reflections, there must be 8 of them! Cropped down to 7.8 MP (1.7x), though the export is 5MP, so you do not even get that much detail here.

    Black-necked stilt wiggling its food

The one in the foreground is giving his meal a nice wiggle before tossing it down. Cropped down to 4.7 MP (2.2x).

    olympus om-d e-mx1 vs Nikon D500

The d500 does have a subject tracking mode (3d tracking), but it's not comparable to modern mirrorless (or canon 1dx3). It is also limited to the center rectangle, not the whole sensor. The Z6ii/Z7ii are starting to get closer to modern mirrorless, but I think Sony and Canon R5/R6 are the only...

    Camera Questions

Mergus, I think the biggest problem with P&S cameras is most of them do not have a viewfinder, only the rear LCD. Trying to aim a 600mm+ (equivalent) lens while holding the camera out at arms length (the distance will vary depending on your age and eyes) is really hard, especially if you want...

Kestrel coming in for a landing

American Kestrel zooming in to the top of a lamp post in a parking lot. Kestrel's are such a pretty bird, so many colors and patterns. This one is pretty skittish, so it is difficult to get too close for a good picture. Cropped down to 3MP (2.8x crop factor), or 1400mm equivalent.

The Kowa Genesis 33 the best kept secret in premium midsize binoculars.

That was my experience with them. The fit me very well and I really enjoy their view. And the size is pretty good too.

    Equipment overhaul?

CW, I think the thing to ask is "What am I struggling with?" Is it BIF, is it reach, is it ISO noise? Different answers for each. I used to use the Tammy 150-600 G2 a lot, but switched to the 500/5.6e. I lose a little reach, but I really think the quality is noticeably better. It is also...

    New USA Nikon D6 anyone..?

For me, I do not see the need to spend that much on a camera. A used d5 for under half the price works very well for me. I really like the 500/5.6 for the reach and weight, and it works very well on my d5 or d850. From time to time I think about getting the 400/2.8E + TC or 600/4E, but I...

Hawk cresting lamp post about to land

The Harlan's hawk is returning to his post and just cleared the top on his way up to land. He is just peeking over right at me. Nikon d5, 500mm f/5.6e, 1/2000, f/5.6, ISO 2500, Matrix meter @ +2/3 EV.

Very nice shot, what a beautiful bird.

    Hawk landing on lightpost

After being chased by the crows and recovering for a bit on a rooftop, the hawk was back to hunting. After an unsuccessful trip down to the field, the hawk returned to one of his favorite lamp posts. This was taken about 10 minutes before sunsun. Nikon d5, 500mm f/5/6, 1/2000 at f/5.6, ISO...

    Crows chasing Harlan's hawk

A few crows chased this dark morph red tail across a field. There were maybe 5 crows pestering the hawk. I'm pretty sure it's a Harlan's. There's some more photos of it coming up next. The photo is from about 30 minutes before sunset, so everything has a red tint from the setting sun. Nikon...

    advice on new monitor

Pick up the xrite calibration kit too. It works very well and if your monitor is a design/editing monitor, it likely is meant to be used with color calibration. I've very happy with my Benq. Marc

    advice on new monitor

For photo editing, high-res monitors are not generally so good. Nice big pixels for viewing 100% is often best. That said, the 4k and 5k monitors are beautiful for viewing photos and videos on! I wanted something that would be good for gaming and work and most 4k monitors are not as fast as...

    Nikon D850 & Nikon500 F/5.6 PF

Yes, that 500/5.6 is about all I use nowadays on d850 or d5. It does ok with 1.4x tc on d5, but does not hold up as well on the d850.

Its time to upgrade, PLEASE help me!!!

The d7200 is not fully compatible with the 70-300 AF-P DX lens. There is some user-interface issue with controlling the VR. It's not a major incompatibility, but if you're thinking of that lens or newer AF-P lenses in the future, I'd go with the d7500. Otherwise, it's a very good camera. Marc

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

It will really depend on how the AF system works for small fast subjects. A 40MP system needs great AF to work with moving stuff, and faster SS. Smaller errors show up more. The R6 at 20MP (which is only a 1.4x crop difference) is likely better for BIF and action. They both have the same...

Its time to upgrade, PLEASE help me!!!

Mr Nugget, "I also am assuming that I should stick with Nikon so we can bot have the same systems??" I did not follow this. Does your significant other have Nikon too? yes, I would stick with the same system between you. But, mirrorless is pretty sweet and something like the Sony A6600 +...

Any have recent experience with 35mm film?

You can get film from B&H or Adorama, for example. Fuji and Illford and Kodak are all available. There is a photo print store near where I live that does 35mm and 120 film (positive & negative). They do not really advertise it on their website, but in store you can see everything they do...

    Phantom power vs Plug-in-power

Gladiator, That's a nice setup! Some mics have slightly different performance depending on how they are powered. You should check if the specs show a lower gain for PIP vs phantom. The other concern is your recorder. Will it supply PIP? Finally, the XLR connection is a better signal that...

Pentax AD 8x25 vs Nikon Trailblazers 8x25 ATB?

Yes, I understood you wanted the 8x, but I only have experience with the 10x. I do not think they are physically different size. They are the same weight, listed down to the 10th of a gram, so I suspect there's not much structural difference. But I have not had them side-by-side. Opticron...
