Agree with the Large Yellow Underwing but not the Beaded Chestnut - doesn't emerge until September. I thought Turnip Moth.

Lambert's Castle, a National Trust site, has breeding redstart. It used to have Wood Warbler but I don't think there have been recent records. It's on the B3165 south of Crewkerne. That's a little off your route. Map reference: ST 336890,98992. Park in the car park and walk around the...

'so presumably you are one of the elite ??' You are making two assumptions here: 1. I was the only who saw the Osprey. 2. In referring to an 'elite' I mean the SOS website. I'll leave it to you to decide.

Thank you very much. I've just tweeted about it, too (@alicksimmons). Twitter is very useful but it will never be able to provide the same level of detail as a thread on BF. I'll keep at it for a while -it's good discipline for me, too, as I've never been much of a record keeper.

    Somerset Birding

I think this forum needs a bit of a Somerset boost and I propose to start posting records from my local patch and elsewhere in Somerset. The alternative site for posting records and items of interest is elitist and constrained and, at best, rather parsimonious with it's information. At worst...

    Waxwings

Not a sausage. I walked the industrial estate from the BocaBar to Tesco and saw nothing. A few berries on low bushes in the grounds of Avalon Plastics and the BocaBar but nothing really to hold a flock.

No mention of this on Somerset Ornithology Soc, Twitter or BirdGuides. Are they still there. Stuck in London until Thursday.

    Waxwings

Thanks for this. I knew they would make their way to Somerset eventually. Do you think there are sufficient berries to hold them there for a few days?

    Little Bustard display sites

This might not seem directly relevant but read on. I spent a few days photographing Gt Bustards in the Castro Verde area of Portugal (not Spain, I know!) last spring. As these have traditional lek sites, they are easier to watch and photograph than Lt Bustards which are less predictable in...

    Gimbal Head Service

I own a Jobu Black Widow Gimbal head. It provides sterling service atop a Gitzo tripod and supporting a 500mm f/4 lens. I had noticed that it wasn't rotating or tilting with quite so smoothly as it did when first purchased. The manufacturer's and the UK distributor's websites weren't helpful...

    Birding the Ourigane area

We also went to Oukamaiden. Little snow as it has been a warm spring so Crimson-winged Finch was missed for a second year although Atlas Horned Lark, Seebohm's Wheatear and Black Redstart were easy. As usual, there were wall-to-wall Choughs of both species. Warning: Unlike last year when I...
