    Fair enough Richard, I've tried several times to edit the Excel sheet (trying to add willow tit and wood warbler to UK list) but can't do it from my tablet - also a bit nervous that I might accidentally erase something. I need a dummies guide to adding species :unsure:

    Wood warbler singing in it's usual spot today (I can hear it as I write this :)) Think it must have just arrived as I did the same walk from the house on Friday and there was no sign.

    A cuckoo calling in our garden for a day on the 16th, and an even briefer visit from a singing willow tit (the first for nearly a year)

    My first instinct was C. Crow but hesitated to suggest it, now that Richard has mentioned those near him I'm even more convinced.

    Sounds like a corvid, heard some very odd noises from rooks and jays recently.

    Not strictly in the house but I had a paradise tree snake in the mail box once, many years ago when I lived in Malaysia. As this is one of the "flying" snakes I assumed it came by air mail!

    What I was hinting at was that in image 3.4 both birds appear to be pretty much in focus, if the corvid is indeed a carrion/hooded crow then the accipiter is clearly bigger. Crows habitually mob goshawks in our neighbourhood but largely ignore sparrowhawks except when they are nesting.

    Bearing in mind the very shallow depth of field that optics have at high magnifications, if two distant birds are both in focus in an image then they are going to be the same distance away, meaning that judgement of relative size is straightforward.

    Could you point me in the direction of any research on eye diameter please. I have a feeling that there is a subtle but significant difference in the proportions and placement of the eye between Goshawk and Sparrowhawk and I'm hoping there may be mention of this in studies somewhere. 🤞👍

    Maggots and wild birds

    I raised a young blackbird that was rescued from our neighbours cat when I was a kid. At one point I tried feeding it maggots from the fishing tackle shop, it gobbled them up OK but I was horrified when I realised that they passed right through it still alive and wriggling! Went back to digging...

    Nice one Ken, it must be nearly 40 years since I visited Bushy Park but the elms were mostly already gone even then, from memory there were huge lime trees full of mistletoe. Another favourite host in London parks is (or at least used to be) poplar. (y)
