    An unusual ring-necked parakeet?

This has arrived on the feeders today along with the normal ring-necked parakeets. It appears to have the same markings, and be the same size, as a male ring-necked parakeet. It's not an albino. I know that breeders have produced colour variations, but this is the first time I've seen anything...

    A hawker and some birds

I haven't posted for a while and thought I'd better bring some pictures along! The migrant hawker was patrolling over the garden and decided to sit in the sun for a few minutes. Five magpies were sitting in the top of a horse chestnut tree. Just as I pressed the button they started flying off...

    Name that pupa!

I found this pupa on a thistle leaf today (SE edge of London). It is flatter than a ladybird pupa and about 7mm long. I say pupa rather than exuvia because it appeared to still have contents but may have been a failure and in the process of drying out. The two dark spots give it the appearance...

    An unexpected visitor

It's a while since I've been in here! It seems to be the time of year for firsts. I'd never seen a brambling until this morning when this one decided to clean up the fallen sunflower hearts beneath the feeder. It stayed around for a couple of hours but has moved on now. I think it is a female...

Help needed - is this a hobby?

I've been spending too much time looking skywards recently and today I saw what I at first thought was a kestrel circling over the meadows. It seemed higher than usual for a kestrel and was slowly gaining height until it was little more than a speck. I took some photos and when I looked at the...

    Moth ID help needed

I found this indoors this morning. I can't find it in my books but it looks as though it is a rather worn specimen. Wingspan is about 30mm. Can anyone suggest a name please?

Another kestrel photo (and a question)

Here's a female kestrel which flew over this afternoon. There have been quite a few gulls around recently. I have problems with gulls, but looking at the mirrors I think this is a common gull. Can anyone confirm the id or correct me?

    A juvenile kestrel?

I was in the garden earlier this evening looking (in vain, as usual) for any swallows or martins. I saw something flying over and took a few pictures without really knowing what it was. It looks like a kestrel but seems too brown. Could it be a juvenile? These pictures were the best of the...

    A young thrush

I was hacking about in the wilderness, otherwise known as my wildlife garden, today and spotted this little thrush sitting in the sunshine. I think it's a song thrush although the young mistle thrush is fairly similar. We get both round here. I thought it would make a change from baby blue tits!

    What's this fly?

I found this fly on a thistle flower here this afternoon. The best match I can find is Myopa buccata. The abdomen seems to be curled beneath the fly.

    A snipe fly?

It was quite windy when I took this picture and this is the best of several attempts. I think it's a snipe fly. I've seen Rhagio scolopaceus here but this one has got wings without dark patches and I wondered whether it is R. tringaria.

    Is this a common darter?

Looking at my book it seems I should have taken a picture of the face of this. Unfortunately this was all I could take before it flew off. I think it is a female common darter but can one of our experts give an opinion please.

    Grizzled skipper or a moth?

I only saw the underside of the wings of a small butterfly which flew off every time I tried to get close. It seemed to be dark grey and white and the closest match I can think of is the grizzled skipper. I haven't seen them here before and am wondering whether there is a moth that rests with...

    Female Black-tailed skimmer?

I found this one sitting on a grass seedhead this morning between heavy showers. I think it's a female black-tailed skimmer but my book says that teneral males are also yellow. I'm assuming that the black markings wouldn't be present on the male. Can anyone confirm what I saw please.

    Lacewing larva?

I believe this is a lacewing larva. Not something I'd care to encounter if I was prey-sized! Can anybody identify the species?

    Longhorn beetle ID help

This beetle landed on some plastic bags I was stacking so I don't know where it should have been! I think it's a longhorn beetle but can't find anything exactly like it. It is similar to Aromia moschata but the colour seems wrong, the antennae too short and there are no willows or poplars...

    Juvenile LTTs

I rarely see long tailed tits in the garden but this morning there were several in a tree about 90 feet away. I took some photos of them and realised they were mainly juveniles, which I hadn't seen before. The photo was taken hand held with a 100-400mm zoom and is much cropped but they still...

    Welcome woodpeckers

I hadn't seen 'my' GSWs for a while and thought they'd deserted the garden. Then yesterday the male turned up at the peanut feeder. He was back again today, clinging on in the strong winds, and seemed to lose his footing just as I took a photo. Shortly afterwards a juvenile appeared. It must...

    Skinhead Great tit

I saw this sad little chap today. He's either moulting or an alien in a great tit skin!

    micro moth ID please

I found this on a nettle leaf, although there was other rough vegetation and grass present. It was about 1 cm long. My books only show larger or more colourful moths.

    Damsel bug?

I found this in rough grass in an unkempt corner of the garden. I think it is a damsel bug, possibly Nabis rugosus. The tip of the abdomen was upturned a little but the bug fell or jumped from the grass before I was able to take any more photographs. Can anyone confirm the identification please?

    Bluetit bully?

A whitethroat has been singing from a hawthorn bush next to my house recently and today I thought I'd try to get a photo of it. I was clicking away at 3 frames per second, hoping one picture would be sharp, when a bluetit hurtled into shot and stole the whitethroat's perch! I wonder how long a...

    Hoverfly ID?

Can anyone put a name to this hoverfly please? I would have thought the facial pattern and stripes would let me ID it, but none of my books have anything exactly like it.

    Caterpillar ID

I found this when I was tidying up in the garden yesterday. It was among the debris in a pot of mint. As usual, none of my books seem to show the one I find!

    Effects of the mild winter

I'm wondering whether the unseasonal weather we're having this year round here is confusing the birds. There was a great spotted woodpecker drumming yesterday in the woods next to my house and I heard the drawn-out wheeze of a greenfinch this morning. Both events seem to be earlier than my...
