Not bad nick for a 30 year old!..

I bought a pair of these in mid-80's, still use them for the garden. Think the seller's a little optimistic with asking price..they cost me approx £160 back in the day. Very nice pair of bins though, I really liked the 9x35 format...

    Feathered Thorn aberration

This interesting form of a male Feathered Thorn came to my lit house window a couple of years ago. The colour, which is a pretty accurate representation, is unusual enough, but even more interesting is the joining of the cross-lines. I've googled through a number of Feathered Thorn aberrations...

    Cat ID please (no photo)

A friend showed me a photo taken last week..... A thickset cat, seemed fairly small, very hairy, all white except for orange dash - possibly a tail spike. I've seen a photo of one in the past but can't remember what species it was.

    Replacement rain guard?

Just broke the rain guard on a friend's brand new Nikon Monarch 10x42. I would like to replace them with an Opticron rain guard, which look as good as any. Their size range is... 0 - 37mm, 0 - 43mm, 0 - 45.5mm. Presume that 43mm is the size I need, but thought it best check first as the only...

Lots more Cuckoos around this year

They've been very thin on the ground where I live in South East Wales for a number of years. There's been one calling on hillside next to garden for this past few days - they used to be pretty regular here but not heard one for years. Unfortunately I've been laid up with sciatica (if you ain't...

My first look through a pair of modern roof prisms

Ok I know - I really need to get out more!|=)| Anyway, I've owned a pair of Opticron Elite 9x35's for this approx 30 years, which were Opticron's top of the range porro back in the day. I've always been very happy with them and up until yesterday, when I was out birding with a couple of...

    Woodlark song?

A friend of mine is convinced that he saw/heard his first ever woodlark in song flight over a clearing in a conifer plantation around Aug 20th. Is this a bit late for a singing male?

ID help with visually striking fly

I glimpsed a very handsome fly on the house wall yesterday. Could only manage the following details - approx. 10 - 12mm long, blue-green thorax (possibly metallic colour), think head was similar, abdomen was orangey with rather vague darker banding. Afraid it's not the most detailed...

    Unusual form of Early Tooth-striped

This one had me scratching my head for a good while, but it appears a to be very unusual form of ETs. Interested to know if anyone's come across one before? Tony

    Svenssons Copper Underwing confirmation

Afraid it's not the best pic of the palps but as I was lining him up for a better shot he decided to do a flyer, didn't manage to get a look of the hindwing either! To the naked eye the palps appeared completely dark with contrasting white tips, but looking at them in the photo I can see they...

    Triple-spotted Clay or Double Square-spot?

Managed to get a shot of this one's hindwings, albeit through a translucent pot base, so not the best but colours are reasonably accurate in showing a mix of grey and brown with orange-brown fringes. I had 6 of these the other night all with similar coloured fringes though the rest of the...

    Giant Horsefly

Had a real bomper on the front door the other night. Going by the size I think it may have been a female Tabanus Sudeticus, but I 've heard that they are not on the wing until the third week of July. Does anyone know if this is correct and if so are there any other candidates? Sorry there's no...

    Grey Common Buzzard

I've had one on my local patch since Feb this year. Today I managed to get my first reasonable view of it perched on a fence post - the underbody is a plain greyish-white with no other visible markings or colouration. Upperparts are a fairly light smokey grey except for main flight feathers...

    Two macros for ID please

Is this a May or Ruddy Highflyer? I'm leaning toward Ruddy, but being a beginner would welcome your thoughts. Not sure but I think this maybe a Square Spot, but haven't ruled out Engrailed by any means? dan

    Mottled Grey confirmation?

Caught this little beauty last night - I'm pretty sure it's a Mottled Grey, but an Early Tooth-striped does come to mind? dan

New to mothing, need some sort of camera?

Before I begin best mention that the only camera I've ever owned is an old Olympus Trip for family snaps and know absolutely nothing about modern digital cameras or photography.|:S| I'm not looking for a camera capable of award winning pics etc, but need something that will enable me to email...

Complete novice of a moffer here folks so be gentle with me. Anyway, saw my first clearwing today, it was on my kitchen ceiling and i'm having some trouble IDing it? Here's a not too precise beginners description:h?: - slender abdomen with 5, possibly 6 yellow bands and bulbous orange tail...

    Moth ID please

Sorry no photo folks. A large mustard coloured moth with narrow brown wing stripe and small whitish wing spot. It came into my house last night. I managed to get it into a jam jar where to my surprise it began to lay eggs, laid about 20 in approx 5 minutes, is this behaviour unusual? dan

Interesting aggresive behaviour by Raven toward sheep

While out on my patch this morning, I saw a Raven pecking furiously at an unidentifiable item on the ground, the Raven was very vocal and appeared to be quite agitated. It then flew off with the item and landed on a nearby fence post still holding the item, but showing no real interest in it...

    Peregrine - double whammy!!

A friend of mine told me that he had seen a Peregrine kill two Woodpigeons within a couple of minutes of each other. He explained that he was watching the falcon flying fairly low across a hillside when it flushed a flock of approx 20 Woodpigeons that were feeding on the local whinberry crop...
