12–13.5cm in length. The adult has a plain green-brown back with a paler wing panel, and yellow underparts. The bill is orange, strong and pointed, and the legs blue-grey. The sexes are identical.

Breeds in Europe, winters in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Open deciduous woodland with bushes and also parks and gardens, often near water.

4 to 6 eggs are laid in a nest in a tree or a bush.

Diet includes insects and berries.
