Identification
20-23.5 cm
- Mostly green
- Blue back and neck
- Black circles with red spots around the eyes
- Red spots on nape
- Head patterned with blue, yellow and red
- Black stripe above the eye
- Thick, heavy black bill
- Grey-green feet
Distribution
Found in the montane forests of Sumatra and the Malaysian Peninsula.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Taiwan Barbet, Chinese Barbet and Indochinese Barbet were formerly included in this species.
Sometimes placed in the genus Megalaima.
Habitat
Upper and middle levels of montane broad-leaf forest canopy between 600 to 1800meters.
Behaviour
Breeding
It excavates a nest hole in a tree and breeding takes place April-June. Both sexes incubate the eggs and care for the young.
Diet
The diet includes berries, papayas and figs.
