Identification

13 - 14.5 cm (5-5¾ in).

  • Dark grey hood with white lines on crown and throat.
  • Chestnut below and above
  • Stout blackish-grey bill
  • Legs grey-olive to light brown

Sexes similar, juveniles paler.

Distribution

Found from southern Thailand to peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo.
Uncommon to fairly common in its range.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Proposed subspecies diluta (peninsular Malaysia) and pulla (northeast Sumatra) not recognized by most authorities.

Habitat

Primary evergreen forest and secondary evergreen forest. Also in lightly logged forest, upland heath forest, bamboo thickets and overgrown rubber plantations. Lowlands up to at least 1220m in Borneo, 900m in Sumatra and 760m on mainland Asia.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on insects, sometimes fruit.
Forages mainly on forest floor and lower and middle storeys.

Breeding

Breeding season May to September in Thailand and peninsular Malaysia, January to February in Sumatra and April to September in Borneo. The nest is a compact cup or dome, made of fine roots and fibres and placed well concealed on the ground. Lays 2 white eggs.
