Length 23-24 cm; much smaller than Wood-hoopoes; tail shorter than other Scimitar-bills. Glossy purple-black; the bill is orange and strongly decurved; feet and legs black.

Eastern Africa: found in Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania
