    Blue Jays?

They just might. I had some here for the first time last winter (we just moved here a year and a half ago). They stayed all winter, into spring but in late spring, they all left and I never saw them all summer long. Then, around the middle of August, I started hearing and seeing them again...

    Today at the feeder

Hey Sara! I saw a hummer in my backyard last night around 7:00 pm! I hadn't seen any in a whole week, since the 13th, so I was positive they were gone but there she was at the feeder for a quick sip. She then flew into the backyard trees and harassed a chickadee before she took off toward my...

    Today at the feeder

Hi Sara... Dan's still around a bit... I saw him recently on another newsgroup. I'm sure he'll be along. Cute puppy!! What was the poor thing doing wandering around alone at that tender age tho'?! She certainly is lucky you found her. Are you keeping her now? I see the poodle finally shows...

    Today at the feeder

Lovely! As I type this, I have my french door open onto the backyard. All I can hear are chickadees (finally!) and goldfinches and sparrows. It's a wonderful sound. I call it Kitty Theater as the cats sit at the screen and just watch (since they're not allowed outside). They sit mesmerised...

    Total birding rookie

Hi and welcome from Northern Ontario, Canada too... I agree with Richie... this is a much safer place to be than out bike riding when birding is so new. ;)

    Sterilizing feeders for storage

But the difference here is that it's such a minute amount of bleach you are using and you're only rinsing it in a mild bleach solution for a couple of minutes, not hours. Plus as far as I know, any residual bleach left after a thorough rinsing in hot water, will evaporate. Done properly, there...

    Sterilizing feeders for storage

Kaattttttttttttttttttttttyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!! :) Hi! I'm by no means a 'hummer expert' but I've always used the bleach solution for glass AND for plastic with no troubles. The mixture is weak enough that it does the job but doesn't harm anything. I still think it works much better than...

3 toughest songbirds at your feeder?

Hmmmm... that's a tough one. The scrappiest birds at any of my feeders are by far, the hummingbirds. They'll chase ANYTHING away! After that would be ... I don't know.... none of smaller birds are really that scrappy. It's always the larger ones that pick the fights.

    After the Hummers Have Gone.......

Suet does not have to be hanging in a tree for a woodpecker to go to it. I usually hang mine off a shepherd's hook AWAY from the trees (near enough for them to use the trees for protection but far enough so a squirrel can't jump) to avoid the squirrels and the woodies go to it with no problem...
