    Osaka/Kansai or Okinawa?

Thank you very much! Sounds like a good idea. I'll check the reports and get started on a plan.

    Osaka/Kansai or Okinawa?

I might have a chance to go to Osaka or Okinawa this August. I was wondering which is the better option for birding. It seems like there are some rare birds in Amami, but I would only be on the main island. I live in the Tohoku region, so I'm just looking for some new birds that are not in this...

    Enchanted Lake Bird Sanctuary (Oahu)?

I'm going to Oahu this June and will be able to devote at least one full day to birding. I was thinking about this tour: http://hawaiibirdingtours.com/tour_coastal.html I have searched for information on the Enchanted Lake, but it seems to be a residential area and I cannot find any website or...

What does your non-birding partner do for your birding?

My husband drives (I don't have a Japanese license). He'll wake me up if he sees a new bird outside. Once he randomly woke me up and asked if I wanted him to rent a car to go look for birds. I said YES. He just bought me new (much needed) binoculars for my birthday. And...for Valentine's Day...

Name that grebe! (winter, Hokkaido) Plus a mystery bird.

I looked up red-necked grebe. That's it! Some of these winter birds are hard to get. Thank you very much, both of you.

Name that grebe! (winter, Hokkaido) Plus a mystery bird.

I'm thinking it's a black-necked grebe (red eyes, shape of grey patch on face), but possibly a horned grebe. It was seen in the ocean in Nemuro. I think I saw only this one. Also, please help me identify the bird in the second picture. Also found in Nemuro. I have no idea what it is...

Eastern Marsh Harrier or Common Buzzard? (Hokkaido)

Thank you so much! How do you know? I've looked at several photos online and in my field guide. Some individuals of both species look similar to this, so I really couldn't tell.

Eastern Marsh Harrier or Common Buzzard? (Hokkaido)

Our guide said it was an Eastern Marsh Harrier or Common Buzzard. This was last week, in Nemuro. We saw only one, sitting on the pole. Sorry for the very bad photo! (I hope it uploads properly.) Thanks for any help!

Audio recording ID from mt. Takao, probably brown-eared bulbul

I'm fairly certain you are correct. I'm a beginner birder, but I live in Japan and there are many "hiyodori" around my town. They are known for being noisy! Your recording sounds just like them.
