British Columbia in May - June

We are looking doing a 3 week road trip through British Columbia next year. Time frame would be end of May, beginning of June. With a classic tour going from Vancouver to Calgary. Including Vancouver Island and Jasper NP. Would this be a good period for birding this region, or a couple of weeks...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

2 Week trip to Nepal resulted in 177 lifers, latest was Fire-Breasted Flowerpecker. During the last days I got news that there was a Dark-eyed Junco very close to my hometown (first for Belgium). Rushed there the first day I was home, and got that one as a bonus for my WP list, :-)

Anyone going out for the day Birdwatching on Christmas Day?

We had (for once) no family business on Christmas, and went for a walk in Kalmthout (One of the largest heath patches in Belgium). About 25 species, with best being Stonechat and Great Grey Shrike. Much better then a fried Turkey :-)

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

I think there is a big difference between 'unlimited funds' and 'No real fixed budget'. With what I understand that they could blow another 10k € on twitching those 5 extra birds, but that they don't want to and know that this 10k will give them some other nice birding trips the coming years. If...

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

Nice one. They added the statement that this Chaffinch is the rarest breeding bird in the WP. Heard this claim before, but if you check IUCNRedList, that spot would be taken by Zino's Petrel given the following estimations: Gran Canaria Blue Chaffinch: The total population is estimated to be...

I think they are there for PR, not for getting extra ticks.

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

That's not from land. Given their time, they were on the boat heading for the spot north of Madeira. The pelagics from WindBirds last from 15:00 till 22:00. And they take the passage between Cevada and Farol heading there. So must be around there somewhere they got the LTSkua, but are a bit...

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

This is the first real attempt on a WP big year. And they seem to be taking it as a year to get all accessible breading species together with some soft twitching. The cost of it will already be huge, and whenever someone with very deep pockets steps up, he will beat their count easily.

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

I'm wondering how they hare going to make sure they get Desertas Petrel around Madeira, and Fea's around Cape verde. I did the 3 day pelagic around Madeira they will be taking at the end of August, and the guides don't make a distinction between Fea's and Desertas, as they consider them...
