    Writing Trip Reports

I used to write exclusively in the past tense but have now changed and mix it up. Stuff of mine you can find through cloudbirders is mostly past tense (though my sichuan report is an exception) but more recent material, especially my blog (thefeatheredvariety), is mostly present tense. Partly...

Australia – The Explorers Way and a few extra bits.

Enjoying your report, thanks! I’ve been here 6 years now and not made as far up Stuart Hwy! In Belair your miners were almost certainly Noisy. Also in the Flinders, check the FuscousH-E against Grey-fronted. The latter are well known from that area. Cheers, Ian

    Adelaide

Hi Mark, Only just saw this. Sorry for slow response. it of course depends a lot on how far you are willing to travel from the city, and if there are particular birds you're after. The avian biodiversity around Adelaide is not as high as some other Australian cities, but that said, you can see...

    Birding the coast around Shanghai

    Birding the coast around Shanghai

Hi All, I have a work trip to Shanghai next week and may have the w/e of 5th and 6th for some birding. I am reading this thread with interest, especially in Reed Parrotbill and other stuff from Nanhui and Yangshan island. But I note the destruction you have been documenting above from last...

Eastern Tibet & Western Sichuan, May 2016

Cracking stuff Tom. I've read them before, and I was there ;-), but I still love reading again!

    Gibberbird

Nice work! That spot makes sense as a site for Gibberbird. They are seen regularly on the William Creek Rd not far from Coober Pedy, and likewise on the track from Coober Pedy to Oodnadatta. Cheers, Ian

    Gibberbird

BTW, I do know there are quite a few chats about this year. Are you sure they weren't female Orange Chats? Reports of those from Gluepot (Murray Mallee) and elsewhere.

    Gibberbird

A great find! I am not aware of any specific protocol for Gibberbird, nor any particular sensitivities surrounding the species (other than that it's tough to get to its usual breeding range). Even if it were close to Adelaide, the number of people likely to twitch is a tiny fraction of what...

    Black-faced Spoonbill in Seoul

I realise that a few other threads have discussed the Black-faced Spoonbill in Seoul but I thought I would just update, having been there last weekend. I visited Dongmak Lagoon as a diversion from downtown Seoul on my way to Incheon airport. Though I was in a taxi, as others have said it is...

    Sichuan Birding

Nice one, thanks Roland! You nailed it regarding the field guide. I did think about Rufous-gorgetted female, looked at the guide, saw no female and assumed (without looking at the text) it was not sexually dimorphic. Ian

    Sichuan Birding

Lots with much greater expertise than me on the thread, but FWIW, I would rule out Slaty-blue female because that should have a rufous tail. I think it's probably a female Slaty-backed. Cheers, Ian

Best Bird Photography experience in Spain in june

Extremadura, especially Monfrague National Park, or the Aragonese pre-Pyrenees and Pyrenees proper. Both excellent for raptors with a great supporting cast. Extremaduran scenery is "harsher", less spectacular, but still IMO beautiful.

    help with Chilean Owls

Iain, I was in Santiago in December and had planned to look for Rufous-legged in PN Campana as per Ian Merrill's report from Dec 2011 http://www.surfbirds.com/trip_report.php?id=2128, and as per Mike's advice above. Unfortunately my camera bag (sans camera which luckily was over my shoulder at...
