    Durban in January/February

BirdLife south Africa has a good resource on locations. They often also write about the safety aspects although I would not rely only on that info: https://gobirding.birdlife.org.za/ ...and a bonus approximately around your dates: https://www.birdlife.org.za/flock-to-marion-again-2025/

    Marion Island cruise

I'm going! And agree that it's unlikely we will get to see the shorebirds on Marion, but look forward to the "long pelagic" nonetheless. Edit: there is a thread on bord forum about the previous Marion cruise. Can't find it now but should be easy search. Second tip is to sign up for the seabird...

    Overhead bird silhouettes, I'd please?

This thread would fare better in the Bird ID section with added info on date and location of the shot. That being said, I don't think it's possible to give a reliable ID with such low quality foto (no offence intended).

    SAGRES TRIP

Dear Hoochman, A birdforum member Elias has written an excellent book on birding locations of Algarve. I haven't used it myself but similar threads like yours pop up regularly and the booklet is often recommended: New book: The 100 Best Birding Hotspots in the Algarve Best Wishes, Antti

Batumi - Boots on the Ground 6th to 28th September.....

The purple drawing by temmie is correct for access from south. After reaching the sea you continue North along the beach to the river. Lots of low bushes and some small rain-filled ponds that could be completely dry along the way. A mountain bike would be easier than a fold-bike for sure! For...

Batumi - Boots on the Ground 6th to 28th September.....

Dear Laurie, Thank you for the excellent reporting again. I believe my time in Batumi overlapped with yours last year and we might have greeted on the platform. Will be exciting to follow what you find this year! Bringing a bicycle seems like a great choice for the flatter parts of the city. I...

ID Handbook of European Birds - thoughts, comments thread

My copy from NHBS is fine and printed in Italy for the matter. A fantastic book to improve my ID skills.

Good weekend destination for early October?

Batumi in Georgia, Caucasus, could be still great although the peak migration of raptors is likely to occur on September. Cheap flights from Bucharest to Kutaisi and bus to Batumi is easy. https://www.batumiraptorcount.org/

Discreet Bird Watching in Martvili, Georgia

What time of the year are you travelling? Caspian gull for example should be easy all year. I would suggest checking eBird for checklists and cloudbirders for trip reports. Perhaps few people visit Martvili for birding, but you should be able to get a general idea of the birds in the region...

Quinta do Lago area, Portugal, family holiday late May 2024

Thank you for the great report, I will get back to it when planning my next Portugal journey!

    Capercaillie in Finland

Not only roads but rails too can work for this purpose. I saw several on a full day train from Mora to Gällivare in Sweden around midsummer once. Overall I've found it more difficult to see them winter time. Keeping eyes on source treetops for eaten braches will be helpful as they often come...

    Wingspan Brought Me Here

I'm a firm fan of Wingspan too although my bird interest preceded the game. Welcome Jordan.

Birdwatching in Finland - Rovaniemi area

The Atlantic coast is typically much warmer than inland Finland, but chilly wet winds can be tough nonetheless. Regarding your earlier question about routes to drive, in general all major roads remain drivable throughout winter. There can be temporary stops of a couple of days after heavy...

    March birding in Scandinavia Lapland

Here's a recent thread on winter birding in Rovaniemi with links: Birdwatching in Finland - Rovaniemi area Mentioning some targets or kind of activities you're interested in would help in answering. The Swedish artportalen.se and Finnish tiira.fi will help you finding out what kinds of birds...
