Nikon P5100 (1 Viewer)

I also enjoyed a stunning picture with P5100 and the Nikon ED82 below :
Nikon ED82 Scope + Coolpix P5100 (A-mode/more Vivid)
+ 3rd party Nikon P5000 adapter with 52mm thread
+ 52mm to 58mm step-up ring
+ FSA-3
http://www.nikonsportoptics.com/Products/Digiscoping/6953/Digital-Camera-Attachment-FSA-3.html

Since the P5000 adaptor is too long after connecting the 52-58mm step-up ring, I cut away a few mm to make the lens of P5100 reach very close to the eyepiece of the scope.

Nice one Ray. I've done this with my Canon adapters. It makes a big difference for the A640 and A650. Neil.

Thanks Malcolm, my pen not here but my eyes here. 8-P8-P
Your bird shots are great too ! :t::t:

Neil, your tonnes of material (particularly the test of new cameras on digiscoping) sharing here really enriched me very much.:t::t::t:
I think I am much familiar with my Nikon scope now.
I like the tube type adaptor as I can make every part of the structure secured well at home before going out. There wouldn't be any factor on site affects the alignments. I have tried my P5100 on a swing-away adaptor but quite often the camera cannot go back to the same position (drifting of 1mm can spoil the image) when swang back. It may be caused by the too many moving parts or..... my skills. Anyway, the tube type I can have the camera mounted as close as possible to the eyepiece and positioned co-axle with the eyepiece beforehand.

Hi to all,

Since a few month also using the 5100. Very sattisfied about results, especially under low light conditions.

2 questions
1.Is there a way to leave the preview on the monitor constant on in stead of pressing the on-button every 2 minutes? It is really annoying and more often the reason for missed shots as it takes a second to light up the monitor.

2. Problem focussing. Pressing the button half down focuspoint is often not the same as not pressing the button. resulting in constantly focussing pressing button half down. I always shoot with camera on infinity . As with the autofocus I had a lot of missers. Is there something that I setup that makes this happen.

(I use a Fieldscope 82 ed)

Cheers

Perry,
If you go to Set-up on the Mode Dial and to AUTO OFF you can change the setting to 30 mins. It does chew up batteries faster though.
For Focus set Aperture Priority and Macro Mode (green zone ) and manually focus the scope to get close. Using INFINITY FOCUS is difficult and I rarely use it unless I'm at nearly full camera zoom where Af is hit and miss.
Neil.

Some more photos taken last week with P5100 and the Nikon ED82 Scope. I am happy with the performance of P5100 just the auto focusing is a bit slow making birds in motion are not easy to catch.

P5100 and ED82 kit

Hi Ray, I would be delighted if I could get pics like these! They are fab. :t:

I managed to get a few good snaps using the same kit as you back in September then I seemed to lose all my settings, everything seems blurred or not too good to work on :C- so it would be great to know what settings you tend to use most?

I have been shooting mainly on S with vibration control on - but appart from that.... who knows.

Would be grateful if you could assist. Thanks
Tina

Thanks Neil.
Your information is of great value. Shall give it another try.
Although putting it on infinity causes me to focus only the scope, as i had the impression that AF in general was to much hit and miss., but I-ll keep practising.

That is one big sun shade you have on the P5100.
Is it just a piece of gutter downpipe.
Or does it have a magnifying lens inside.

I also notice your shutter speeds are quite low on those pictures.
Is the tripod head a Manfrotto 501.

Thanks for posting

Thanks Malcom!
The long sun shade helped me a lot by giving an extremely dark environment inside for viewing the image (specifically the focusing sharpness) on the DC's display. Yes, there is a magnifying lens of 3X capped inside. I made the sun shade by a plastic cover of an unused file and as long as it's original because I really don't know how long is it enough in reality when used at field. Last, I cut it into 2 pieces and overlapped them for easy carrying. In order to set the shade prefectly and quickly sit in front of the display with no light leaking and easily to pull off for moving place to place. A computer case slot covering plate was screwed on the the camera bottom and then the sun shade was sewed with a few pieces of strong magnets for holding it stabily on the slot plate (as shown in the picture).

The tripod head was 501, very stable but a bit heavy to move around so I have just bought a 701HDV yesterday (a gift of the economic rebound 8-P). Lighter and the smaller size makes my setup smarter :king::king:

Yes, shutter speeds were slow. As Neil always said, HK's air is always misty and that day was cloudy too. Nikon's high ISO is not so pleasing too.

Hi Tina,
Just for sharing, my setting was A/Marco (zooming out a little but not exceeding the "blue" range)/ISO <100/VR on/Vivid or more vivid mode.
Maximum Distance from bird (tree bird)`is 15M the farthest.
My own view most important is the aligments of the adaptor and the eyepiece. I cut the P5100/5000 adaptor (3rd party with 52mm thread) with a pipe circular cutter and then tried very carefully to adjust the length of the adaptor by cutting more and more in order to reach the closest distance between the eyepiece lens and the DC's lens (no hitting each other for all zooming movement). Doing so you may over cut than actual needed, doesn't matter, you could use the tape to connect 2 pieces which is strong enough to hold the tube straight even leaving a small gap inside.

Wow is this a long thread or what??? read the whole she-bang, made a bunch of sticky notes which will flatten out the learning curve fr'sure!

Am excitedly waiting on the boys in brown; snagged the FSB-6 bracket for $29 off of ebay. Too good of a deal to pass up; oh heck it aint no good though w/out a camera! So the 5100 it is, $310 from a reputable online dealer + the 16 DS from adorama and I think i might have a decent rig for a decent price. Hopefully everything will fit together OK- there is some conflicting info about the 5100 only hooking up w/ something called an FSB-1A. Good grief the numbers zoo of brackets, assorted doodads, rings and gizmos is enough to make my head spin- who came up w/ this hodgepodge anyway? prob some tech who had just tendered his resignation.

anyway, have both the 82 and 50ED so am looking forward to getting out there and practicing on some cooperative trees at first...

thanks to all for your input,

kind regards,
UTC

Looks more like a Common Sand to me Ray. Nice pics though.

LCD-Freeze: Any ideas?

Hi,

I love the P5100 as a digiscoping camera. It certainly is a great bit of kit and very capable of taking nice images. See Yellow Wagtail & Black Stork pictures attached!

However I have a fairly serious problem with my camera. Every so often (and usually right at that crucial moment) the screen freezes (sometimes the image appears halfway down the screen). This can usually be solve temporarily using some light percussion maintenance. I have taken the plastic housing off to see if there was any obvious loose connections; there were not (and by the way; if anyone else does this please remember to remove the battery as it has a kick like an angry horse)!

Has anyone had similar problems; any advice?

Regards
B
