american red squirrel

Has anyone else experienced eastern gray squirrels that are shy, timid, or otherwise not interested in bird food?

Hello, folks! This isn't really a thread that I needed to post, but I guess I just kind of felt like posting it. Where we live, we have not experienced eastern gray squirrels being pesky. In fact, I'm starting to miss them after we moved out of a location with loads of them! We still have them...
  2. SQUIRREL!

    SQUIRREL!

When I am trying for bird photos on my front deck, but Squirrel knows I have a pocket full of peanuts!

"Hey, you in there! Is there a key to this thing? A knob, a button, a secret door? How do I get in for some seeds?"
  4. Seeking Refuge

    Seeking Refuge

Now that it's getting rather hot, need to cool off a bit. Caught this "bird" taking refuge from sub zero Fahrenheit (-20C or colder as I recall) temperatures and snow in March.

    Sat. FUN: FATHEAD

My wife bought this decorative bird cage with the idea of putting flowers in it. Then she decided she hated it, so I took it and put sunflower seeds in it, thinking small birds like nuthatches and chickadees and maybe the occasional chipmunk could get through and get some. That worked, so this...

    SAT FUN: Busy Squirrel

American Red Squirrel. This guy is a regular visitor to the yard, and spends a lot of his time lately burying sunflower seeds here and there, as he is doing in this photo. Very fun to watch.

I would like to think this squirrel paused here to take in the beautiful fall colours surrounding him. But in reality, I think he is just digesting all the peanut butter and sunflower seeds he just stole before he attempts to climb anywhere!
  8. American Red Squirrel

    American Red Squirrel

This guy will every now and then grab two acorns at once. He snips them off above where the stems branch. I've seen him do this several times and have been trying for a week now to get a shot of it. Happily he paused long enough for me to get this shot. It cracks me up every time I see him do this.
  9. American Red Squirrel

    American Red Squirrel

No ear tufts, but definitely red. And cute. Seen in a small park in Denver when I took an hour's shopping break from my conference there (most of that was lunch time anyway). Now back to baking before browsing. Variety 4 done. Dough for variety 5 chilling. One more tonight, then finish the...
  10. American Red Squirrel

    American Red Squirrel

I very seldom see this squirrel in New Jersey.

    American Red Squirrel

This is a shot from a trip I took north a couple of weeks ago but never got around to posting. Was looking for Evening Grosbeaks and did get good shots of them which have already posted but there were also quite a few of these red squirrels running around. There are much smaller than our grey...

    American Red Squirrel

I was impressed with the long hairy ears which occur in the winter. He moves with very high speed and often jerky motion.

    Forest buddy

This little fellow followed me and my camera for over three hours when I was looking for Boreal Chickadees and Gray Jay deep in the forest.
  15. American Red Squirrel

    American Red Squirrel

Set-up too high really for this Squirrel on the ground but couldn't resist the way a ray of the light through the trees landed on it. On the full size version you can see my hide and trees reflected in it's eye!
