    I'm going to suggest trying a Kowa BDII 6.5x32, not a true compact but a reasonably priced waterproof, small, light roof with a very useable wide field. Great depth of field for a roof and perfect birding in thick woods.

    Today I got to try out a new-to-me 8X30 Nikon E (C) while dodging rain storms. Highlight of the day was how many Cardinals I saw and how rich the red came through a 30ish year old pair.

    Tips for new bins

    I'd like to second PhilR's Atlas Optics ED recommendation. I recently purchased a pair myself and can't see the justification for spending more on mid-level optics. There are certainly differences in ergonomics but the glass won't be bettered anywhere close to the price range. Plenty of folks...
