What Bird am I seeing? (1 Viewer)

I live near on a river near Okehampton and saw a bird the other day that I hadn't seen before and cannot find it in my bird book.
It was the size of a thrush/blackbird, grey in colour with a bit of white. It flew along the river for a while before landing on the water and then it dived down (presumably to catch a fish) and then surfaced again and flew off. It was only under the water for a few seconds but appeared very much at home below the water surface.
I hope I have the colouring and size about right but it all happened quite quickly and not long enough to make notes!
Any help identifying this bird would be great.
