Testing the quality off a scope (2 Viewers)

The gold standard for the optics is the star test.
Search BF for those words, you will get an education on what a good optic will show and what flaws to look for.
Do note that this does not address mechanical issues, focus considerations, weather sealing or durability.
The manufacturer has to juggle all of the above elements within a budget., so corners were probably cut somewhere.
Testing a scope for any of these elements in a retail setting is impractical, which is why independent expert evaluations are highly valuable.
However, these evaluations don't normally provide any sample variation guidance. A handful of long time expert observers have been able to provide some such here on BF, but only on specific models and only on the optics.
Henry Link evaluated a number of copies of the Nikon Monarch ED82 here on BF some time back and was very pleased with the optical standards maintained. He more recently was less impressed by samples he saw of the new Swaro 115mm or the big Kowa 99mm.
