Pembrey Country Park
West of Llanelli, signposted well from all directions.
Large area of conifers, also plenty of broad leaf woodland, open clearings, sand dunes and a small lake with two hides.
Offshore, large numbers of common scoter, wintering grebes and divers. Good viewpoints from the county park, especially at high tide.
Woodland is alive in late spring / early summer. Good for warblers, incl whitethroat, lesser whitethroat, blackcap, wood warbler. Large numbers of goldcrest, occasional firecrest in winter.
Crossbills breed, and supplemented by occasional winter irruptions. Can be elusive, but often seen near the miniature railway line station, bathing in the puddles after a period of rainfall. Green and greater spotted woodpeckers usually quite easy to find.
Occasional wintering bittern.
Area is subject to a lot of dog-walking activity. The RAF training flights overhead on most days can be very distracting…..but it doesn’t seem to bother the birds!
