Oriental Hobby on Palawan (1 Viewer)

Mark Harper

World Birder
I have just returned from Palawan, where an Oriental Hobby was successfully hunting bats just before dusk along the road to Sabang by the entrance to Lions Cave. We watched it take three bats in 15 minutes one evening and one bat the following evening.

If anyone is visiting there shortly it might be worth having a look, as it was one of the highlights of our trip.

Mark,

Do you have any other advice re visiting Palawan as I intend to go there in December,

Thanks,

John

John,

Can be bad for Malaria. May want to take some pills.

For birds, St Pauls Underground River has many endemics and the main road up from the Peurto Princesa is worth birding too, as there is still forest there (especially towards Sebang), with a good few endemics, just by stopping at likely spots. eg Palawan Tit, Flowerpecker, scops owl, frogmouth, hornbill, YT leafbird, SB bulbul, etc.

Ive also birded the Iwahig penal colony and Rasa island. Both good, though Rasa is a bit specialist. Had the hornbill at the entrance to the penal colony.

Palawan is a bit more birdy than most the rest of the Islands, so make the most of it if you are island hopping.

Gareth,

Thanks

Hi John,
Recently, a first photo-documented record of Erythrura prasina (zone of Mt. Mantalingajan). There have been a couple of other probably good records in 1984, and in 1990 from around Iwahig I think, but not enough to list the species. Apparently, occasionally erupts from N Sabah.

I am slowly putting in new taxonomy on my Palawan Insular List - should be done before December - let me know if you want it.

Steve,

"Erythrura Prasina" had to look it up, well done re the Pin-tailed Parrot-finch and you’re first documented sighted in this location.

I regret that I am well below your level of expertise and accomplishment, if you have any general tips on places to visit and places to reside in, transport information etc. for general bird-watching in Palawan; then I would be most grateful, also any information on areas that would be less desirable (for any reason) would help, this is my first visit so all advice is welcomed.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, appreciated.

Good Luck with future discoveries, I am sure that your documented findings will be appreciated by many.

Regards,

John

Hi John,
Just to clear up a misconception. The Pin-tailed Parrotfinch is certainly not my personal record. It was found by a team doing a bioassay in S Palawan. I know about it only because I am on the Records Committee of WBCP (Wild Bird Club of the Philippines).

Steve,

OOPS!, I misinterpreted your last post and assumed the sighting was yours,

Your correction of my erroneous assumption demonstrates your integrity, sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Regards,

John
