Can anyone suggest the reason why one of our local nuthatches would suddenly start to apparently appear to be 'guarding' our dovecote which doubles as a feeder as no dove has ever been near it. It sits in the entrance and stays virtually motionless for up to 10 minutes at a time keeping all other birds away. When I first saw this behaviour I suspected that it was ill but as the photo seems to show its condition appears to be excellent and if I get too close it flies away quite normally only to return after a very short while. I've had nuthatches here where I live for some years now and their numbers have thankfully increased but I have never seen this type of behaviour before.
