Micro migraine: C. stigmatella or semifascia? (1 Viewer)

Now there's a thread title to get people excited.

I had this one down as Caloptilia semifascia, on the grounds that:

  • It's the right time of year (previous VC records)
  • We have a field maple tree in the garden
  • Markings for this species are apparently variable.

However, I would have to say that based on markings alone it looks much more like Caloptilia stigmatella, even though it's only March and I'm not sure there's much willow, sallow or poplar within half a mile at least. Still, someone in Sussex (albeit about 40 miles away) reported a stigmatella a couple of days later on 21st March (photo here) so it's not completely out of the question.

Can anyone suggest how I should record the moth pictured?
