Birds and waterfowl seem very scarce everywhere we go this year. There are still quite a few birds coming to our feeders.
We did see a Northern Harrier as it passed just feet above the ground about 50 feet in front of us, closest we’ve ever been to one.
We thought we saw a Winter Wren, but, on examining the picture when we got home determined it was a House Wren.
We haven’t added any new birds to our list for the past month.
We had an injured Brown Thrasher coming to our feeders for several days, we are pretty certain it was hiding in the hedge at the rear of the house and hopping to the feeders at the front of the house where it was feeding on spilled seed. It was unable to fly and it seemed to hop with difficulty and would lie in the grass and did not seem to like to move. We managed to catch it and intended to take it to Wildlife Haven near Winnipeg, but, they came out and picked the bird up.
We learned that the bird survived for a few more days but passed away.
At first we thought it might be a male but after watching the other Brown Thrashers come to feed we think it was a female as a lone juvenile would attend the feeders and attempt to get an adult bird to feed it only to be chased off.
The following day we had a Blue Jay attack a House Sparrow in the tree by our feeders. I eventually went over and scared the Blue Jay off as he was just torturing the sparrow. The sparrow seemed quite traumatized and perhaps injured. The Blue Jay roosted nearby, probably waiting to finish off the sparrow.
We took the sparrow in and kept it in a large bin until it seemed to recover, we then took it into our garage where it perched on my finger for a few minutes and flew across the garage and perched on a window. We opened the garage door and after some minor drama the sparrow flew out and across the street to join its buddies.
We’ve been seeing lots of juveniles being fed at our feeders the last 2 weeks.
