I took some images through my phone scope of my LED flashlight at 100feet/30m. I’m not doing something right because I was not able to get the clarity of other images posted on here of star test results. Can any one make any sense of these? I’ll try again the next clear/dark night we have.

Hi and welcome,

It needs to be a point source such as a bright star.

Perhaps a single LED might be small enough.

Regards,
B.

I took a few more pics tonight. I am only able to see clear rings on one side of the focus. It’s very blurry when I focus to the other side of “in focus” and I’m not able to see clear rings. Is this something I’m doing wrong or the scope?

I also took some pics through my phone Skope the other night of the full moon. Can anyone explain why I have the blue color around the top of the moon but not the bottom?

The star images look like atmospheric dispersion for low elevation stars.

The Moon photos may be the same if the Moon was not high in the sky.

Otherwise something was tilted, maybe the camera.

The non circular star images could be due to poor Seeing.

B.

The thin blue one sided line on the Moon could also be because the Moon was not central or if an angled scope maybe the prism.

Was the temperature dropping?

Was the scope on grass or concrete?

Was the view over grass or buildings?

Are these pictures on both sides of the sharp point? If so, I think that apart of the slight non circular form, they look quite good and you got good detail on the moon pictures also.

The camera may not be tilted but could be off axis.

The blue fringe might come from the camera lens, but I am not sure.

It was about 3 hours after sunset so the moon was not very high compared to the middle of the night.

I guess I could have overlooked the alignment of the camera over the eye piece. The 883 is an angled Kowa scope. The temp was dropping, it was about 40 degrees F. The scope was on a tripod about 4.5 feet above a concrete driveway. The view was over grass/forested area.

I could only get one side of the focus to come through. The other side looked like an out of focus blob. I’m going to try again this weekend and see if I can do better.

Thank you all for the replies/assistance. I am enjoying this scope. I took it to Yellowstone National park and grand Teton to observe the fall leaves and wildlife a month ago. My wife and I are thoroughly enjoying the clear images. My children also enjoy looking into the night sky. This star test stuff is more for my curiosity. You guys are the best!
