Hi - I'm travelling to Finland mid-September'06. Intend driving from Helsinki via..... Keuruu, Kokkola, Oulu, Taivalkoski/Kuusamo areas to Rovaniemi (visiting Santa!) and flying back.

Hope to see much wildlife (birds & mammals) and nature at its best!

Any tips would be sincerely appreciated.

Thank you / cheers,

Herman

Maybe you have to give more details about your trip, because if we don't know how much you spend time in each stops, it's rather difficult to give any advise to you. Secondly you visiting time is in the middle of the migration time, so the location of birds can be difficult and the situation changes contantly.
Of course, eg. Oulu area is very good birding area.

Thanks for your reaction, Hannu. Am spending two nights at eacht of the places mentioned with the exception of Rovaniemi where we will stay for three nights. Am really looking forward to seeing your beautiful country at that time of the year!

Oops, fall colors will be pretty but be prepared for some rain.
The general info for Finland is unfortunately mostly in Finnish at
http://www.birdlife.fi/english/finland-for-birdwatchers.shtml
but that page is worth reading for an overview.
here is the list of cities with birding towers
http://www.birdlife.fi/lintuharrastus/tornientaisto-2006-yhdistystornit.shtml
the second last column is the contact person for the tower and their phone number is last
