Dinas and Gwenffrwd RSPB reserves, Upper Towy Valley.
Situated nea village of Rhandirmwyn, about 12 miles North of Llandovery. (Follow signs for the reservoir Llyn Brianne).
Dinas is a circular walk, steep and difficult in a couple of locations, but generally a pleasant walk. The mature oak woodland is alive in summer with arrival of hundreds of pied and spotted flycatcher, wood warbler, blackcap, willow warbler, chiffchaff and redstart to name a few. There are hundreds of nest boxes, with an estimated 200+ pairs of pied flycatchers present. Kingfishers and dippers are regular, and goosander found on the river.
Red Kites are a big attraction, and are seen daily. Peregrines nest up at the reservoir and are regular visitors. Ravens are resident.
Gwenffrwd is a more open heathland area, but with many of the same species as at Dinas. Good chance of woodcock, as well as peregrine, merlin, red kite and ring ouzel in summer. Osprey have been known to stop off for a short while at the reservoir nearby on migration in autumn.
