Caterpillars on oak ID please (1 Viewer)

My wife has bonsai oaks and this year they are being attacked seriously by small (1") caterpillars. Dark green/black on top and pale grey underneath. We are in Berwickshire. ID please.

Thank you very much ! I hadn't thought about flies and had been looking at moth and butterfly caterpillars - to no avail !
