Bogota in February 2008 (1 Viewer)

Stay-at-home Dad
Hello,
I will be traveling to Bogota for work in February, and I should have at least one full day and parts of a few other days to devote to birding around the city. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

La Florida

Andrea Morales showed us around Parque La Florida, where we found Subtropical Doradito, Bogota Rail and heard Apolinar's Marsh Wren. I posted some information and photos here:

Andrea is an enthusiastic ornithologist studying hybridization in Rhamphocelus tanagers, and has worked on surveying high marshes for wrens and the like. I may have an email somewhere.
Diego Calderon-Franco may know someone else who could serve as a guide.

Cheers,
Jeff

Hi "jhwinfrey",
I guess you already traveled to Bogota and hope you have had great birding times.. as "oregonian" (Jeff) recommended you, La Florida is a great place inside the city where some endemics and near-endemics can be easily spotted..
I was the birding guide of Jeff and friends' trip in Nov 2007 (see his posts at http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=102265, called "Gringos Attend 20th Annual Colombian National Birding Encounter")... there are several other humedales (swamps) inside and around Bogota to see the endemics (Bogota Rail, Niceforos Wren and Silvery-throated Spinetail) and several other interesting stuff as Rufous-browed Conebill, Andean Duck, an isolated population of Spot-flanked Gallinule, Subtropical Doradito, Rufous-tailed Tyrant, etc etc etc. Just an hour from the city the superbly isolated population (only one in SA) of the Horned Lark can be visited.. and in the outskirts of Bogota, in the E mountains several cool species, including nice hummers (Black-tailed Trainbearer, Shining Sunbeam, Sword-billed Hummingbird) are present. Some 4 hours from Bogota is Soata municipality where the INSIDE TOWN ENDEMICS are easy stuff to spot!!!... (Mountain Grackle, Chestnut-bellied and Indigo-capped Hummingbirds, Apical Flycatcher and Niceforo’s Wren).. plus other interesting ones: Bronze-tailed Thornbill, Rufous-browed Conebill, Rusty-faced Parrot, Moustached Brush-Finch and Golden-fronted Redstart. Finally, a small reserve only 2.5 hours from Bogota (Rogitama) has some nice hummingbirds at flowers including endemic Black Inca and almost-endemics Lazuline Sabrewing and Short-tailed Emerald....
as other birding companies that operate in Colombia, we (COLOMBIA Birding) offer trips to all these places in E Andes and around Bogota.
saludos, Diego.
