Hello everyone. So I'm here in the Oklahoma City area. My question is, " how do i keep the black birds from eating all the bird seed? Thank you in advance

Welcome to Birdforum.

You could try caging the feeders so larger birds can’t access the seed.

Yes, I've got a couple of the caged feeders and 1 that's an open feeder for Cardinals. I may cage the open feeder just as long as the Cardinals can get through. Thank you

Hi, welcome to the forum on behalf of the staff and moderators. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group.

You can try only feeding safflower feed for a week or two, blackbirds don’t like it but cardinals, house finches and doves will eat it.

Hi WIGZ and a warm welcome to you from me too. You don't say which species these 'black birds' are, if you don't know can you get a picture, as the advice could vary.

However, the general advice is often that once you start a bird feeding station you are inviting all the neighbourhood birds to it. it is not always possible to restrict the actual species. Cages are often used to deter squirrels, so the gaps will usually be too wide for most birds, except crows and ravens perhaps. Most people think, well they are still "birds" after all.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Thank you all. These black birds are Grackles. I'll try the Safflower and see if that will help. It cost more to feed these birds than it does to feed my dogs.... lol
Thanks again

The grackles would probably eat the safflower, they can’t really eat nijer seeds due to their beaks. Your songbirds and cardinals will - though the cardinals do like other things better.
