Hi! I'm hoping for info on good guides for Argentina. We have one month early next year, and would like to travel either independantly or with a small birding group. How are the public bus systems? Is it possible to do it by yourself without renting a car? Any help appreciated.

Dear Phyll

please let me know what month, how many people, and what places would you like to visit and I can give you some suggestions.

Regards,

Guillermo

Hey,
Can I add to this post? My girlfriend and I are planning on spending a month or so visiting Patagonia and parts of Chile..

We are most interested in seeing some of the excellent species found in Patagonia, could we get an idea of places to visit? We would be relying on public transport.

Thanks!
Damien

Hi Damien,

Places to visit in Patagonia would be:

- Peninsula Valdez (for whales & sea lions) - Province of Chubut
- Punta Tombo (Penguin colony) - Province of Chubut
- Calafate (For Glacier) - Province of Santa Cruz
- El Chalten (Fitz Roy) - Province of Santa Cruz
- Ushuaia - Province of Tierra del Fuego

The first two places are on the coast and you'll see birds from desert and water birds. The other three places are at or near the patagonian forest where you can see the other birds of Patagonia.

Other places:

Bariloche (Big tourist destination - many people!!!) - Province of Rio Negro
El Bolson & Esquel (Forest area) - Province of Chubut
Copahue (High Andes) - Province of Neuquen

There are many places, but all separated by long distances. That's why a bus trip is a time consuming thing. So you can make yourself an idea, to get from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia you have to travel over 3000 Km. Planes are faster but quite expensive (!).

In the far south, I'd suggest hiring Santiago Imberti from Rio Gallegos - I didn't but friends have and he has nailed on sites for Pat Tinamou, White-bellied seedsnipe (East side of garibaldi Pass I think), Mag Horned Owl etc.

Good luck, Alan

Santiago Imberti is a very good guide for Patagonia. He is an expert for that area and he also wrote two books about the birds of Rio Gallegos and about the birds of the Los Glaciares National Park. An interesting species you can try to see with him is the Austral Rail, was thought to be extinct.

The only problem is that during the austral summer he works as a guide aboard the cruises to Antarctica. So he won't be easily available to show anyone birds of Patagonia.

guide for valdez?

Hi Fritz- im on my way to Argentina at the moment, currently in South Bolivia. I will be spending time in Buenos Aires, but also plan to get down to Valdez Peninsula later this month. Do you have the contact details for the guide you mentioned, and do you think he will be available later this month?
Thanks,
Jim.

Hi Jim. I'll send you a PM as soon as I get his contact details.

Fritz can you also send me the contact details for Santiago Imberti, if I get back to Ushuaia this coming winter maybe I can catch him.

I would say Ushuaia is well worthwhile visiting, lots of birds and accomadations. Very touristy but I have seen white-throated Caracara flying around town, no need for the dump run even.

Two other good guides for Argentina are Mark Pearman (specialises in hard-to-see species for the big lister) and the crew at Seriema Tours (German Pugnali, Hernan Casanas, Juan Mazar Barnett). Seriema have a website (google it); PM me if you want Mark's email.

hi,
i have some clients needing a biding guide for the Patagonian Atlantic cost over Christmas / January, i'm guiding others already at that time in Tierra del Fuego. If anyone could pass me details of guides they thought were good i'd be very grateful.
Cheers!

Any Information

I have just heard that I shall be spending 2 weeks in San Nicolas in mid-January 2008.

Are there any good birding places in the immediate vicinity? This is my first visit to Argentina, so any information will be helpful. I will also have some time in Buenos Aires, so details on places nearby would also be helpful.

Plus is the Yzuireta/Narosky 'Birds of Argentina & Uruguay' the only/best book to get?

Thanks in advance

David

All help gratefully received.
