Hi,

Off to Seattle for ten days at the end of the month and need to start mugging up on songs and calls sharpish.

What are the best online or CD sources?

Thanks,
Graham.

These should get you started:

http://www.xeno-canto.org/america/

http://www.junglewalk.com/popup.asp?type=a&AnimalAudioID=10134

Both sites allow you to download the recordings to your computer/mp3 player for free. Xeno-Canto is not just limited to America. There are thousands of recordings from most continents, and the collections are being constantly added to. Just search for the species you want then either listen to/or download each track that you want. There is an amazing array of recordings of songs/calls of some species, particularly the more common ones.

The second link gives a nice collection of what appear to be a representative selection of North American birds. Looks like they are all from Wiskonsin but I reckon a fair few of them are also found in the NW. It would probably take you about half an hour to save all the species on that page to a file on your computer, once you get the hang of it.

Your only other bet might be if someone allows you to copy their CD collection if they have recordings for the area you are visiting.

Best of luck with your trip,

Steve

Thanks, Steve. Will sift through xeno-canto,... was wondering if there were any area collections but of course that's a great resource.

And the junglewalk link is a completely new one on me - that's great!

Thanks again,
Graham

Graham.
I'm over there in September to visit relatives in Olympic park. Would be interested to hear how your visit goes.

Alan.

Will report back, Alan.

Problem with those websites is all the hassle of downloading, tagging and labelling each file individually. Also the variable quality and sound levels make them less than perfect for copying to phone or MP3 player.

I've ordered the Stokes CD, and the Peterson, but may not be here in time... http://www.amazon.com/Birding-Ear-Western-America-Peterson/dp/0395975255/ref=pd_sim_b_2 http://www.amazon.com/Stokes-Field-Guide-Bird-Songs/dp/1570425884/ref=pd_sim_b_3

Meanwhile will use the excellent Seattle Audubon site to revise... http://www.seattleaudubon.org/birdweb/browse_birds.aspx
