Best spot for northern species in Upper Peninsula Michigan? (1 Viewer)

My family and I are planning a trip to Michigan this July, and I was given the "assignment" of choosing a spot for us to spend a whole day birding in. Other than that day, our trip will be family-oriented, so this is my best chance to get some birding done.
Since we are planning to go to the Upper Peninsula (probably just the eastern part), I think this will be the best place to spend The day. I would like to get some northern species like Crossbills, Evening Grosbeak, Black-backed Woodpecker, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Gray Jay, or Spruce Grouse. I would appreciate some suggestions as to some locations (state parks, wildlife refuges, etc) where I could find some of these birds.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,

A good place to start would be Whitefish Point and the nearby Taquamenon Falls State Park. Farther east is Hulbert Bog, and Seney National Wildlife Refuge for all these species. Be forewarned that ticks are hungry up there this time of year. Check out Skye Haas's website for more information:

Good luck!
