Hey

I am desperate to try and see Hobby this summer and heading to the New Forest this weekend. Staying around Cadnam, but wondered if there are any spots that people could recommend? Any people seen Hobbys over the forest/Hampshire heaths this year?

Any help is very much appreciated!

Matt

A 2hour walk anywhere in the Pigbush-Beaulieu Road Station area should be sufficient if its sunny

Well...No definite Hobby sightings. Did see something way off in the distance on the Saturday that resembled a large Swift hawking for insects...but I'm not claiming it yet. Did find lots of Redstart in the edges of the surrounding oak and birch woodlands though which definitely made up for the lack of flacons!

Thanks for the tip off. Its a beautiful part of the forest.

Unlike swifts when a Hobby hawks for insects it catches them in its talons and then transfers the dainty dish to its bill. If the swift-like birds you saw were doing this then they are likely to be Hobby, but if not then thery could have been Swifts,
