Ball head yes or no? (2 Viewers)

When used with a lightweight scope I have had adequate results with a ball head.
Yep. The ED50 works quite well with a ballhead. For a heavier scope you'd need a fairly heavy ballhead with friction control, and then you can easily use a lightweight videohead instead.
One important factor is to have separate rotation or pan capability in addition to tightening the clamp on the ball.
If I want to keep the weight down as much as possible I use an RRS BH-25. That doesn't have a separate pan capability. But it's extremely light (~146 gr.) and very stable and vibration free for the weight. Add a lightweight quick release platform and you're all set.
