The lack of Arctic Skuas during this blow has been really noticeable.

I was over on the Wirral today Jane, further east to you.Had c20+ Leach`s, all heading west. Also the swimming Skua, which looked like the pale Juv LTS I had from my side of the river y`day.I kept looking back to it waiting for it to fly but it must have moved off when I wasn`t looking.Got...

This is interesting about the White Wagtails, there were only 5 at Seaforth today so the birds moving east from the North Wirral shore must have been heading across the Mersey to the north of Seaforth. In fact very few migrants over here at all today, with c20 Wheatears( 7 Greenlands ringed)...

Don`t worry Jane!! The pictures on the flickr site show the birds to be Linnets.

I saw that bird twice, soon after Gav Thomas found it on Richmond Bank and a few days later at Birchwood Pool at Moore.I`m certain it was a Smiths but the photos weren`t great and I also think some people saw and photo`d a dark argentatus which confused matters. When you think out of the 100 or...

Good to hear that others are looking for this Phil. It`s a 100% text-book 1stW, so it`s VERY distinctive....if you see it you`ll know straight away that you`ve got the right bird.I can`t go on enough about the smooth, velvety dark bloom of the underparts contrasting with the paler head and the...

I`ll have to get a Questar so I can check the Gulls on the Wirral from Seaforth!!!

I`d say there were c5000 Gulls on the sea off Crosby at high tide today...c2000 BHGs/Commons, the rest big jobs. Also of interest at Crosby marina was the smudgy headed Herring Gull again. Its got a fair amount of Smithsonianus features and has been returning here for a couple of winters...

Hi, juv Glaucous Gull on the flat calm sea off Crosby amongst thousands of Gulls this afternoon along with 2 Yellow-legged Gulls and 4 Med Gulls.the Glauc was last seen heading over towards the Wirral....keep your eyes peeled Jane!!

    Hoylake Bird Observatory

I hadn`t scrolled back enough to see it. Looks interesting, the eye size looks a bit big for Cach, although the distance could have made the eye surround look darker.I always think that the eyes on adult or near adult Casps look tiny and quite oriental in shape. We need to get closer views of our...

Hi Jane, despite the pink legs, this looks like a Yellow-legged Gull, the tone of the mantle, the size of the primary spots, structurally etc. They are not always long winged and even yellow-legged!!, although if the pink was really bright you would have to think about maybe a hybrid again.I had...

    Hoylake Bird Observatory

Interesting, looks like it might be a LBB x Herring hybrid or a small 4thw ( hence the small amount of white in the primaries) Argentatus...anyway it looks like the Larus addiction is kicking in!!...until the migrant passerines start arriving!

    Hoylake Bird Observatory

It`s a tough one that. The black may only go as far as P6 but its difficult to say.The outer primary certainly seems to be all white tipped which would be unusual for an argenteus but not of course for an "argie"...but it looks too white headed for one of those, I haven`t seen a summer plumaged...

    Hoylake Bird Observatory

This has got an interesting primary pattern, seemingly all white tip to p10 and what looks like black markings on p5.Bill looks a bit bright though, but would have liked to have seen it closer!

Hi Jane, I had an adult Caspian Gull at Crosby marina yesterday which after a few minutes flew out to the river and could have conceivably joined the throng at your place.A large individual with a big bill, probably a male.Checked again today but very few big Gulls, clearly you had them all.

    Hoylake Bird Observatory

Hi Jane, only had a narrow timescale today so I was only there at lowish tide until 2.20pm but could see lots of big Gulls gathering on the incoming tide.87 PB Brents just off Hilbre visible from Red Rocks , plus RB Merg, Rt Diver etc on sea.....will try again though!

Thats interesting as there has been a regular leucistic adult Herring at Richmond Bank this winter, although its not that uncommon an occurrence. Its never seen at Seaforth though.

    Hoylake Bird Observatory

Hi Jane, thats the one...oh no! not another Vega Gull!! maybe this is the way forward with Gulls, as only a few mad people like to look through them in real time, just take photo`s of the flocks and sift through them later over a glass or two. There are a couple of interesting ones in your third...

    Hoylake Bird Observatory

Hi Jane, thats a great offer! What a great pic that middle one is. I notice there`s a nice adult argentatus just left of centre there.I`ll try to get over there either tomorrow or Wednesday.

    Hoylake Bird Observatory

......not sure there is such a thing! The dense coastal fog put paid to any Gulling over here today, but it sounds like they were all over on the North Wirral shore anyway.

Thanks Jane, might try and get over there to look at those, with that sort of number of big Larids there must be a chance of something decent, although I`m sure you would have found it! Yes the LWHG complex is a Marmite type thing, I got into it because in my early birding days thats all there...
