There was a high tide birdwatch on Saturday - with Wirral Rangers and RSPB staff as well as many Voluntary Wardens, and they were there well before high tide and highly visible. Hence little disturbance on Saturday.

It may seem like we are picking on the photographers unfairly, but the four that were on the tide line before high tide were, by their presence, encouraging others to go out there - people are always curious about those big lenses. My experience is that it is rare for birders to venture off...

Never any doubt they were Knot, Tanny, and not a chance there were two Lesser Yellowlegs!! |:(|

Would have been a nice count for Hoylake - 138. ;)

Yes, you're right - there does seem to have been plenty of birds passing through in the 1970s. Whoever was the compiler for White Wagtails in 2003 and 2004 didn't do his homework!!! (to be fair he did say the 2003 and 2004 counts were 'probable' high records). Highest count I can find was 309...

Which I'm pretty certain is a record high for Cheshire and Wirral. Three figure counts are unusual - "a max of 200 on the beach at Hoylake on Apr 14th" in 2004 was the previous record, 175, also at Hoylake, in 2003 being the previous highest figure. From 2002 there seems to have been a surge in...

Went down to Hoylake at 2pm and counted 35 White Wagtail between the old toilet block and the new lifeboat station - this was in one sweep of the 'scope. So probably still around 200 in total for the whole beach from Red Rocks to the lifeboat station! There was a slow but obvious movement...

Do you have Greenshank yet? One was reported at Hoylake today but I think it was east of the lifeboat Station.

Makes you wonder just how many gulls there are along north Wirral and across to Crosby! As well as the c12K at Meols there must have been at least another 2,000 off Leasowe and New Brighton plus whatever was off Crosby. The birds I saw were all counted at high tide.

Still large numbers of gulls of Hoylake and Meols - tried to do an accurate count and got 11,700 but that comes with a large margin of error. A bit too distant to try and do a species breakdown but reckon about 50/50 small/large gulls, large gulls mainly Herring. KD has had 2 Med Gulls and 3...

I got a count of 605 Great Crested Grebes on the same day (20th) between Hoylake and Leasowe Lighthouse but knew that was an underestimate - but didn't realise by how many!! Previous to 20th the record count for Cheshire and Wirral was 604 - my count off Dove Point on Oct 25th last year. So your...

Have you noticed the colour ringed knot in the right hand photo from yesterday? Most of the ringed knot have two rings on each leg plus a flag. You can make out two white rings and possibly a green or light green flag on the left leg - but that's all. I saw both legs of two CR knots on monday...

Monday was the same. The waders were very flighty up to high tide then settled and hardly moved for about 30 minutes - about 3/4 very close up to the wall and the rest about 200 yards towards Red Rocks. Birds were in a long line with the depth varying from 30 to 100, mostly Knot. Did several...

Definitely not an Auk - shape and flight was totally wrong - and I'm sure it was a small shearwater. Timing was exactly right and I was told it flew west past dove point.

Managed to connect with the Little Shearwater at 3.15pm off the Lifeboat Station at Hoylake!!! It was flying west along the tide line looking distinctly smaller than a Manxie with a much more flapping flight - about half way in size between a Leach's and a Manxie. Very white underneath. Luckily...
