Has anyone taken a closer look at the Farnham Heath 2B XB? I was taken in on the whole 2B XB thing and still hope it is. Yesterday however it was seen courtship feeding a Crossbill. Could this bird be a hybrid? They do hybridise with Crossbill. Rationale behind this is: It calls like a 2B...

Agree with Sean but of course don't walk out into the meadow and flush. Snipe counts by the bird group take place under controlled measures on an infrequent basis. Counts have all but ceased now as suitable habitat is covered by water and the risk of disturbance is increasing.

There is a exceptional number of Bramblings at Crooksbury Common. Currently upwards of 100 flying into roost. I was there yesterday and at 1430hrs around 22 flew in and more were arriving as I left. Rich Horton and Neil Randon have both confirmed numbers well into the 100. Park in the car...

Two-barred Crossbill again at 0855hrs this morning at Leith Hill. Call of another bird reminiscent of Parrot Crossbill but none of us had eyes on. At least 15 Common Crossbill and the odd overflying Brambling. Worth keeping your ears and eyes open.

Not published on the Surrey Bird Club Sightings page and not worthy of inclusion on Birdguides but there has been a Barn Owl at Tice's Meadow since well before Christmas on an almost nightly basis. The bird is working the whole of the meadow and is best viewable from the viewing mound...

Update on Willow Tit Forest Green Rich H has not seen or heard Willow Tit at Forest Green for two years now. Despite having well stocked feeders visited by Marsh Tit and three or four days worth of ringing he has not caught up with this species. A Willow Tit was last seen and heard by both...

Dartford Warblers are best seen from the Longcross Carpark (near to where they fly model planes). There are currently fledged infividuals there. Rich

Nightjars at Crooksbury Crooksbury Common currently has at least 6 churring Nightjars. Cracking views of display flights and calls last week with closeup views of both male and female birds. Given the size of Crooksbury Common this is perhaps one of the easiest areas to see the species...

Two Groppers this morning reeling just off the boardwalk at Staines Moor. Sadly no further sign of the female Ring Ouzel. The nearby Black Redstart was still present at Thorpe Park Farm and at Staines Reservoir there were single Black Tern, Little Gull, Great Northern Diver and a breeding...

Female Ring Ouzel still at Staines Moor this morning. Difficult to find initially but by 0745hrs was showing well and calling. Staines Reservoir produced 1 Black Tern on the south basin. Rich

Redstart and Tree Pipit at Crooksbury this afternoon. Moved over to Churt Common in the vain home of seeing last year's Dartford Warblers but they weren't to be seen. Shame.

A hospital appointment in Tooting on Monday involved a visit to three birding sites beforehand. Firstly to Tice's Meadow to attempt to get a better view of LRP (five had been seen ther in the morning). None were present although as I arrived Rich H pointed out 8 Golden Plover flying away from...

Visit to Tilford this morning for Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. One head on the Nature Reserve side of the bank but not seen. Two Great Spotted Woodpeckers were holding territory on the far bank and were chasing anything which could been seen as competition. Two Green Woodpeckers, three Nuthatch...

Quick foray up to Staines Reservoir for the Great Northern Diver which was stilll there and showing well. Wasn't aware of the Black-necked Grebe that had been reported earlier in the day so was pleased to see one on the south basin. Returned via Longside Lake and again picked up the 1st winter...

Forest Green today for a quick recce with a BTO ringer keen on finding an area to ring and study Marsh and Willow Tits. 5 Marsh Tits present during the trip and they were calling in the spring sunlight. Whilst we sat and chatted a Curlew, somewhere overhead, called and a Buzzard mewed...

Johnny, you'll be the first to know. I still can't believe the decline in the species. I used to see them regularly at Butterwood and when I twitched the Ring-necked Duck at Passfield most birders spent most of their time looking at the Willow Tits at the path entrance. As a kid I used to...

Kojak, don't give up mate! Rich tells me you only saw two Marsh Tits which is a surprise given the numbers around. The call yesterday was unmistakeable and I have played back a number of time to confirm what we heard. Fully aware that this could be seen as a suspect sighting given the lack...

Many will know of the debate as to whether or not Willow Tit survives in Surrey. There have been consistent reports of this species in Forest Green with birds visiting a bird feeder. I have been to this location previously and seen only Marsh Tit but today following a three hour tetrad survey...

A short Tour de Surrey today to bag some birds not yet on my Surrey Year List. First stop Longside Lake where I disturbed a female Sparrowhawk before finding my target bird, a first winter drake Smew. Next stop Barnes with hope of finding a Bittern but to no avail. I did find my second target...

There is still a pair of Wood Duck on Homewood Lake, Chertsey. These are presumably the birds which bred and produced 3 young last year. This species is a Cat E bird. Still, a useful addition to the Surrey Avi-fauna and one I have seen on and off since moving to the area in 1995. A beautiful...

No sign of the Shrike this afternoon at Thursley and little else in the rain. Surprisingly, given the downpour, two Woodlarks were singing. 101st species in Surrey and 149th in the UK this year. Rich
