Several recent sightings of manx shearwater from your old stomping grounds at Fife Ness - records in each of the last 11 months. Rob

Meanwhile I've no idea what is going on here in Fife. The concentration of little auks is crazy and we are seeing huge numbers even in southwesterlies (when normally I wouldn't bother looking!). Plenty of grey phalaropes too (I saw 4 yesterday including a flock of 3). Rob

    Birds fae Torry

Back in the days of watching the Eden(!) I saw crows take down a number of birds - a black-headed gull and 2 wood pigeons. The technique was to jump on the victim's back and peck the skull until it succumbed. Horrible to watch. Rob

I have long suspected that jack snipe can be incredibly site faithful in the winter - basically you could throw a blanket over the area they use. Doesn't make them easier to spot though! Rob

Affordable? Attracted by the idea of not "having" to flush jack snipe on my WeBS count, locating woodcock etc. Rob

    Birds fae Torry

Still no bluethroats in mainland Fife. A morning when I found wood warbler, whinchat, pied flycatcher and garden warbler still felt as though something was missing! Rob

Hellfire Andrew! Spent yesterday afternoon in the Fife Ness area with only a lesser whitethroat to show for it. Rob

How fast does a white-billed diver fly? Barry's bird (similar plumage) passed Fife Ness at 10:25... Rob

Think you're right Stuart. I self-found my first on Girdleness in May '96. Saw several others there in the 90s. I went up for another showy bird in 2008 but there don't seem to be as many now. Fife is a pig for visible bluethroats (although I have seen a couple here). Rob

Proper photos from the professor of listening - surely not! Passed through yesterday evening after an epic day. Watched the dolphin goings on whilst eating fish and chips. Earlier had the unforgettable experience of stroking a capercaillie, a v distant white-billed diver at Portsoy and my best...

I think mowing the lawn is my most productive. How often do you get to hang the washing out in Torry? Also how often is it still there by the time it's dry?! Rob

IIRC the Fife Bird Atlas says that the summering female goosanders here come from Wales and NW England whilst the males go to Norway. Or something. Rob
