When I was on Fair Isle in 1992 the warden (Paul Harvey) could identify Tree Pipits purely by the way they flew. Needless to say I've only ever been able to identify them if they're fluttering up and down singing above a tree. The words 'Pipit' and "Acrocephalus warbler" tend to make my brain...

Had a Raven over Cults this afternoon. I'm not up date with their distribution in Aberdeen. Arrived from SE about 16:35 and soared a bit, did its 'flipover' display a few times and then hared off back SE. Wondering if it was one of yours. First two Swallows of the year seen here too.

Can I tell a 'one that got away' story? Some years ago (can't remember which one now, as I didn't file the 'record' for a good reason) on a nice August afternoon, I was birdwatching on the south side of the Coo. It had been a good day for Manx Shearwater, and I saw many dozens, ALL moving north...

I saw one off the Ness in Sept. 2003 (accepted). It lingered for about an hour, feeding in the company of Manx. Looked like a bit like a small Skua when not flying.

What a lovely photo. Garden Warblers are beautiful, subtly-plumaged birds, and this is probably one of the best photos I've seen of one. When I lived in Wales I got quite used to their song, which I rather miss.

They like cheese sandwiches (experience gained long ago at Gullane Point, East Lothian). Cheers

Check every bunting. Rustic Buntings have turned up as early as March in the past when the winds were E or SE (I found one really by accident on 7th April long ago). One might be tempted to assume Reed Bunting for every brownish bird at this early time of year. Maybe unlikely nowadays as they...

From local mailing list: Blyth's Reed Warbler and Marsh Warbler along the railway line at St Fitticks fields, just inland from the ness (Girdleness). (11.26). Both birds singing I believe. Cheers

May be of a slight interest: http://www.flickr.com/photos/recoveringscot/4271784977/sizes/o/ (The harbour entrance in 1961. Some recognisable features.) Cheers

Look out for a Red Kite today. Last seen heading towards Aberdeen town centre at 08:23 this morning and may be visible at some stage from Torry! Cheers

I have managed to smuggle a link to some fascinating old colour photos of the harbour area and other parts of Aberdeen (and the whole rest of UK if you want to search) by Douglas Campbell which have been uploaded today to flickr - as this shot...

I had several hundred past my house on the other side of the river today. All the ones I heard were Pinkfeet: http://www.flickr.com/photos/recoveringscot/2891382579/ Cheers,

A small skua has just flown east, quite high, down the Dee heading towards the harbour. Could be either Arctic or Long-tail by size, and it attracted the curiosity of some Swifts. It's only about the second or third time I've seen that happen.

Needle-tailed Swift would do me. I would move for one of those, and I'm not a twitcher. Last record seems to have been about 16 years ago. We're surely due one. Cheers,

Hi Ken, I had a leucistic Jackdaw nesting opposite my house for three years in the same chimney pot (the paired bird was normal). The plumage changed significantly in the distirbution of white with each moult, but the bird was always piebald. He or she seems to have gone now, regrettably. In...

There are at least 30, probably more, over my part of town today. Also Buzzard. This could be a good week as SE winds are predicted off and on. And I'm on holiday. Cheers

The Peregrines were back soaring over Marischal College at 10:45 am today. They drifted off north very slowly. Cheers,

Had my first town Woodcock of the winter (I see the odd one in the town centre about three or four times in a winter) over Greyfriars House, Broad Street car park east this morning at 09:10. Also about fifty Fieldfare, in two groups, west at 08:30-45 this morning from the house. Cheers,

Raptors never play the game right. All the interesting ones are either miles off or flying away from you. And how easy it is to lose them, despite their size. There was a minor influx of Blackbirds (including more than a few females) at the weekend round my way. Several seen flying high in that...

I often fancy a trip to Shetland on the ferry, but since I don't drive there would be certain difficulties getting about. Two weeks in the Sumburgh Hotel would be a nice relaxing jaunt though. So now I have to decide for next year: two weeks seawatching at the Butt of Lewis, two at Sumburgh or...

    Birds fae Torry

Stayed at home today again. Didn't fancy the winds much. The day's watching was completely devoid of interest, apart from a couple of Redwing and Sparrowhawk, until about 14:25 when a flock of 70-80 Fieldfare passed the back window over Great Western Road going SE to NW. My first decent-sized...

If that was at 10:30ish it was probably the one I saw soaring then streaking over Broad Street round about then. They're still making odd trips to Marischal College even though breeding's over (I work close by). Three thrushes over Marischal College off the sea about ten minutes later. Almost a...
