Happy New Year Great to see so many of my good friends last night at our 'Birders Xmas Get Together' at the Kings Arms, Ebbw Vale. Luke, Rodney, Gary, Al, Lee, Nic and Steve were just a few of the lads that made it. Gary brought in a Grey Seal skull that his son Richard had found on a...

Pity you did'nt have some time off at home this weekend Luke, we could have had a get together with some mothing at Silent Valley, our upland moths are all still in winter scarves and gloves - not like those spoilt Dorset jobs you've got down there!!! I'll send you an Email over the weekend to...

NATIONAL MOTH NIGHT in Gwent - Saturday 15th May. Should anyone be interested myself and Rodney Morris are holding a moth trap at Silent Valley Nature Reserve (Near Cwm, Ebbw Vale) tomorrow night, it start's at 8.30 and finishes at around midnight. It's on behalf of Gwent Wildlife Trust and...

Great afternoon's birding Luke, I really think Honey Buzzard are incredibly interesting raptors, it's a joy to have them here in 'darkest Wales' !!! Keep your eyes open everyone for what may currently be an invasion of Painted Lady butterflies, I caught this one nectaring on some Bluebells...

It might not be the best image of a Hobby, Luke, but the fact that you caught it with a predated Club-tailed Dragonfly is worthy of your posting, so well done :t: Also like to say that Mike's Vixen image is really brilliant

Well done Chris, one tough species to photograph I imagine, you caught the characteristic red rim of the birds eye very nicely. A very pleasing shot of a first for Gwent that certainly merited your early morning efforts to get it. Now all you need to do is practice your Cuckoo calls ;~) Best...

Whinchat are superb little birds, very photographic, hope you get some great shots of them Mike. Let us know what you think of the Welsh Salon of Photography exhibition at Big Pit if you over go.

I knew you guys would come to the young whippersnappers aid, I'm pretty sure that once he gets the basics he will start producing masterpieces and probably leave us way behind!!! Thanks for those kind words Gary, those bl**dy Beardies can drive you nuts, just as you think it's staying still for...

Excellent images for two absolutely real tough species to photograph Luke, once you have got to grips with Adobe Photoshop CS3 your images will be crackers! Perhaps Mike, Gary or Al could help with a few tips as I'm reasonably sure they use Photoshop for their own excellent bird images, I don't...

Mike's latest photo's/Gary's Barn Owl Fantastic photo's Mike, that must be one hell of a good piece of log, can you or Al tell me where to get one ;) Awful sad to find such wonderful birds as Barn Owls dead Gary, we don't have half enough around locally for my liking, but on a more positive...

Little Egret diet Spent a very interesting half hour or so watching a Little Egret at the Newport Wetlands Reserve today. Just like their close relatives the Grey Heron the Little Egret has one hell of a good appetite, as I watched it ate a frog, at least six small fish (too far to identify...

Had another good look around on my way home too Mike, more in hope than real expectation. I saw a Brambling today in with a flock of Chaffinch, these birds should really be gone when the Wheatear start arriving, it's been a long old winter, and I can't wait for the summer migrants to come in!!!

Not a bad photograph at all Luke. Little wonder that this Great Grey Shrike has been hard to find, Mynydd Illtud is a pretty big area with lots of cover even for a bird that likes perching such as the GGS does, add to this the recent weather conditions at this location and even seasoned birders...

That's more like it Luke, it's always great to share a bit of good news. I'm certain I speak for all the subscribers to this (your) Gwent sub-forum, very well done and we all hope it will be a tremendous birding experience, never to be forgotten, and the start of something big...:clap::clap:

I heard Mike ask him, if it's about the same thing Al...well yes, but it may not be!!!!!! The plot thickens and the young whippersnapper remains totally silent, probably too modest to post |:$| Great that Jack has recorded his first Great Spotted Woodpecker, tell him to keep up the good...

It's no good young Luke, I just can't resist...a goose is not a raptor!!!...all the other species you mention are , but a goose is most definately not...;):-O What a cracking game of rugby yesterday, never seen a harder or more physical encounter between Wales and England...Wales Wales Wales!!!

I was'nt exactly over the moon with mine either Luke, it's hard to get any reasonable photo's when the light and cold is against you. Al, better weather forecast over the next few days, Sunday will be a much better chance for good views, but it's always hit and miss with SEO's as I'm sure you...

Waunafon Bog Conditions at Waunafon Bog these last two weeks have been pretty bleak, it's not recommended to take your vehicle past the cattle grid, unless it's a four wheel drive, best to leave them in the lay-by area (if there's room). As Luke (plus Mike and Thomas!!!) will testify it was...

Waunafon Bog Quite a lot of birders up on the 'Bog' this evening, three Short-eared Owls seen but only at a distance, annoyingly two Ravens disturbed the only bird that seemed likely to come in closer for a better view and it flew up high onto the side of the Coity, Shorties just don't like...

Superb Shortie shot Luke, coming in as if it means business. Great to confirm our 'twilight' suspicions from last week that there were possibly four birds on site. Your Hen Harrier shot can be put down to nerves on this occasion, or perhaps the cold!!! Glad you managed some good images from...

Hairy experience Luke, brings back memories of Mike's encounter with the Tawny last Spring. Don't ever take risks with Owls, there are too many stories of bad injuries ie. Eric Hoskings, to be complacent, but at least you had your best ever views. As your well aware Owls have super-duper hearing...
