Seriously, absolutely agree with you especially when young people are needed in the world of ornithology to use a general term. Indeed, at one time (maybe they still do) but in the shop at the WWT centres they sold a pair of red plastic bins with a mag of 4x and a small field guide for £2.99... -

Goldcliff Lagoons - 21st Sept. Well, I got there. Spent about 2 hours looking from the screens and a short trip down to the sea wall. From the third screen from the car park there were the most waders. 16 species of wader was a good haul for the day. These included Ruff, Knot, Dunlin... -
