The SBSG site only requires log in for certain features such as site guides, publications and older records. Non-members can currently get access to the most recent sightings, and several other areas, without logging in. Re harriers, my personal feeling is getting other birders to see them is...

I know Sheffield Bird Study Group do not report wintering ones in the Peaks for their protection, partly at the request of other organisations. On a different note, does anyone know anything about the RB Flycatcher reported at Barbrook today?

There seems to be at least two birds, maybe three roaming the moors. Seems like they can turn up anywhere too!

Hi all. Has anyone got any gen on where exactly where the GGS reported from Big Moor/Longshaw is?

From BG: "still on Marpool Estate at Buxton Green on mown grass, showing well"

That must have been poor fieldcraft to flush dotterels - a (quiet) group of about six of us got within feet of the Stanage birds last year, and they actually ended up walking towards us! They're not the shyest of birds...

Yup that's the place, if you loiter round the feeders outside the cafe for a while you'll get good shots no problem (especially if it's a weekday when there's fewer people wandering around to scare them off).

Damn it! I caught the train up and only had a quick look in the car park! I think on reflection mine's definitely a lesser, especially if the two hanging around Longshaw are obvious ones. The whiter wing bars were making me wonder, and it did seem to have a different jizz to the others around...

Had a morning at Longshaw this morning, 3 x raven and 1 x brambling were the highlights. I had a squint through the redpolls and was wondering about the credentials of this one as a mealy? There's more photos in the ID Q&A section.

Wouldn't surprise me at all - while I was there the Great Northern Diver vanished for the entire afternoon, so if something as big and distinctive as that can go missing, a small duck that only looks subtly different from a lot of other small ducks could be lurking around somewhere...

Yup that was me, cheers for the head up! Did you have any joy with the ring-billed?

Good day at Carsington today - Great Northern Diver and Yellow-legged Gull were lifers, and finally ticked Barnacle Goose (I didn't want to do Cat C's, but I could be waiting forever for genuine Cat A birds in my neck of the woods...). Other highlights included Willow Tit, Buzzard, Pintail...

Off for my first trip to Carsington today - hoping for RB Gull, YL Gull, GN Diver and Scaup, all of which would be lifers. Wish me luck!

Has anyone had any SEOs recently? Leash Fen and Beeley Moor seemed to be dripping with them this time last year...

I thought that too, but then a bee-eater was repored over Staincross in Barnsley yesterday... there's possibly one doing the rounds of S.Yorks/North Midlands!

Bee-eater reported over Bolsover today... does anyone know anything about this?!
  17. Pete Mella

    Derbyshire County Birding

Cheers, yes, there only seemed to be three.

Went up after work - they were ridiculously tame and got some great shots between rain showers! Also got a cracking ring ouzel and a flushed woodcock.

Cheers, Clive. Looking out of the window at the current weather I think I'll try tomorrow morning instead... even if they've moved on still good chance of ring ouzel, and wood warbler at Wyming Brook on the way!

Hi all, If anyone has any gen on the dotterels at Stanage Edge being there today (even negative reports), I would really appreciate a PM. I'm thinking of having a look up there after work today, but it's a long walk from the bus stop and a bloody awful day weatherwise if they've moved on...

I know it's just nudged into S.Yorks, but have any of you guys seen the GG Shrike on the A57 near Strines? I'm thinking of having a look up after work today to see if it's still there.

Cheers for the tips re GNDs and hawfinches, looks like I won't be going this weekend (checking out a S.Yorks hawfinch site nearer to home instead), but really do intend on checking out Carsington before long. Does anyone have any guesses how long the GNDs will be hanging around?
  24. Pete Mella

    Derbyshire County Birding

I'm thinking of trying for a trip to Carsington for the GND and Cromford for the hawfinches at the weekend - can anyone tell me how reliable they both are, and any tips for finding them (favoured corners of the GND, for example...)

The Sheffield waxwings have been loyal to old sites as well this year - Staples car park, Meadowhall, by the Sportsman in Crosspool, near Asda at Handsworth, Redmires Res, Hammerton Road Police Station... If anyone had the time to trawl the old records, I'm sure a fairly accurate waxwing...
