Black-necked Grebe at Pleasley Pit, at crack of dawn this morning. Bit different to the girl on the lilo who was swimming around the other evening!

Popped up for the GGS at Beeley this afternoon. Viewed from about 100yds from the triangle along on the north side of Harewood Road, fairly distant.

Pretty early for it, but a ringed plover at Carsington today. The pair of Oystercatchers on Horseshoe Island already nudging pebbles around, right where they attempted last year. Water level up to 92% now. Very nice starling roost/murmuration in Alfreton on the way home, maybe 3,000 birds...

Brief late afternoon nip into Carsington yesterday brought up nothing in particular, so had time to notice this bird at the wildlife centre. Anyone know much about intersex mallards, or I am looking into it too much here? Not sure if it was quite the 100 pied wags at Poundland, still got the...

Apparent pb-Brent goose with some Canadas up at Carsington late yesterday, those Canada flocks seem to move around so worth keeping an eye out. http://youtu.be/-0JqRHEzySo?list=UUMLRf2RwAO6N19DIFrm8oOg Must have missed it while messing around with a new camera down at Paul Stanley, the...

A single Bonxie disturbing things in the Carsington gull roost this evening, lost it toward Horseshoe Island and couldn't relocate. Very sorry, wet and exhausted looking Barn Owl around the restaurant picnic tables at Hardwick Hall yesterday, although it did manage to fly off. Must have been a...

    Derbyshire County Birding

After two and half years, today we had the first activity in the sand martin bank at Carsington, 2 pairs spending a lot of time, going in and out all day long. Build it and they will come... eventually.

45 through by 10:30, and while I was busy showing the half-term kids the nesting GCGs, at least another 10 Arctics went through during the day, probably more. One sat on a buoy right in front of us, so even the kids saw that one. And one Little Gull stayed all day. The Blackwits left high to...

And another one today, reported to me by a visitor up here on the county border at Hardwick Hall.

Well I sure hope they did take it to school!

    Derbyshire County Birding

Perhaps the latter, I had a flock of 25 or so up around the trig point just before Christmas. At the time it looked like they were just lost in low cloud.

Bit of news on that Osprey sighting at Carsi a couple of weeks ago. They must be really sharp down at Rutland because one of the Wildlife Trust guys was able to identify it from that bit of dodgy digiscoping, says it's a 3-year-old female that moves between Rutland and Wales, stopping by us on...

That osprey picture I mentioned. One lucky holiday couple had it both Monday and Tuesday, if it was the same bird... Nothing today?

    Derbyshire County Birding

Yes, I was in Lane End, got off a couple of rubbish shots before my camera batteries died (will post later). No fish, it was sat preening for half an hour before a few half-hearted fishing attempts, then the BH gulls gave it hell and it drifted off over Hall Wood at 16:45. Light grey ring...

    Derbyshire County Birding

Had a day in the WLC at Carsington today, haven't been in for a while and good to see the level staying up despite the supposedly dry March. 2 LRPs, an Arctic Tern and a Dunlin and Curlew were the best of it, plus the 2 juv GNDs. Entertainment for the punters with the Coot and GCGs...

Just to throw it in there, my partner had c.30 waxwing at the other end of Belper, in bushes at the bottom of Beckstitch Lane this morning, although nothing later.

36 as I left this morning. They were quite settled for a good 20 minutes, very approachable, but once ready to feed they kept descending into McDonalds and then disappearing toward the rugby club. Had a look down there but couldn't see where to exactly. Picked up a few Hawfinch in the rugby...

Almost makes me one brambling a disappointment, first one for our garden though. The blackcaps have left, instead we've got flocks of 10 yellowhammer and 20 reed bunting probably dropping down the 100 yards or so from the pit here in Pleasley. No apples in the orchard next door this year so it's...

In that case I may want to revise my pinkie claim, sans bins and in the midst of work, it may well have been those greylags of yours Dave. Bad birdwatcher strikes again!

First flock of pinkies I've seen heading back today, c.65 NW into the county over Hardwick.

Don't want to say exactly where but out here in the Derbs/Notts border it looks like I have a new Raven territory, after having had three or four birds wintering locally. The conquest continues...

Had the GND from the wildlife centre today, not the best view, looked like an adult though. The regular bird maybe? Not much else doing, hardly even any winter thrushes around the place.
