Trumpeter Swans Trumpeter Swans I found at Boyton yesterday..shame they are unlikely to be wild, still nice to see. There was lots of raptor activity with SE Owl, Barn Owl, Hen Harrier all showed well along with Marsh Harrier, Buzzard, Kestrel and Peregrine today.

Hopefully the Ravens are male and female and will pair up. That's a big count of Rock Pipit. Which side of the river was it on? That is also the first report I've heard of Peregrine locally. They have been a bit thin on the ground. Hopefully I'll catch up with the Peregrine in the future...

Nice pics of the Purple Sandpiper. Hoping one will turn up at E Lane again soon. Sadly the Great Grey Shrike didn't linger. It may well be on Hollesley or Sutton Heath by now. I did manage to catch up with the Ravens at Gedgrave today.

Great Grey Shrike Hey Paul As you probably saw on FB I did indeed track down the Great Grey Shrike and had good prolonged views. Also had the privilege of watching an Otter hunting for 30 minutes in a drainage ditch. Also bumped into a Hen harrier and saw quite a few Buzzard, including a very...

Hi Paul There is definitely 1 RL Buzzard, last seen on Monday at Boyton/Butley. I looked again Friday, but no luck. Possibly the Minsmere/Dunwich area might be your best best or Haddiscoe/Breydon Water. Sean

The views haven't been great & there was something of a mix-up with the ID of a Common Buzzard with many features similar to RLB except the tarsi weren't feathered & the white at the base of the tail not broad enough. At the same time this odd Common Buzzard was seen last Friday I had another...

    Suffolk Birding

I saw at least 5 Whitefront mixed in with Greylag today. Easily viewed from the new hide about 200m S of the sluice cottage and bushes. Numbers of teal & wigeon there too. Had a swift over Burrow Hill at Boyton this morning, made me miss a few heartbeats. Then re-found the presumed...

    Suffolk Birding

It is strange how so many good birds were just 'up the road' at Great Yarmouth cemetery & yet apart from YB Warbler & Ring Ouzel early on, no rarer birds were really found along the Suffolk coast. Had a great day between Thorpeness & Minsmere with at 2 YB Warbler including a bird we found being...

    Suffolk Birding

Patch birds Light easterlies and mist brought in a few migrants to our little part of SE Suffolk. I was a bit late to the party as usual, but in our area in the last few days have been 1 Wryneck, 30+ Whinchat, 6+ Pied Flycatcher, 3+ Spotted Flycatcher, 3+ Redstart, 4+ Tree Pipit. Most...

    Suffolk Birding

In my experience it depends more on the conditions, rather than time of day, with birds making landfall more likely when fall conditions prevail. However, they are often easier to locate in mornings after a fall the previous afternoon or night here in SE Suffolk, though I have had several...

    Suffolk Birding

I managed to catch up with a very elusive Wryneck found by Barry Woodhouse at Shingle St. After over 2 hours I managed couple of record shots before the hoards descended. I think others got better shots eventually, but I had a party to attend and couldn't hang around. Other birds seen were...

Plenty of good birds on offer in Suffolk right now with Greenish, Subalpine Warbler, few Wrynecks and RB Shrike. If you have details on the pelagic Gi I'd be very interested. Cheers Sean

Hi Gi Yes was easily my best seawatching day, although the sea-spray nearly destroyed my car & optics!! Hope you get to enjoy the next big seabird passage. I've missed all of them in the last 4 years, until this one. Good birding Sean

Hi BK56 welcome back to Suffolk. Where are you based in Suffolk? These days with news services & the excellent Suffolk Birding with BINS site, people post less & less on here. Last couple of days have been pretty good. Excellent seawatching on Tues with good numbers of terns, skuas & a few...

    Suffolk Birding

Was lucky enough to find a Wood Warbler at Bawdsey Quay this morning. There were plenty of other common migrants in the area, especially Willow Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat and Whitethroat. The pick of the others were a single Whinchat, Redstart and a couple of Tree Pipits found by Mark...

    Suffolk Birding

Well had a few weeks back at home. Been fairly quiet from a rarity point of view, but did manage to have the now sadly infamous 'escaped' Black kite over my garden, which was nearly as good as the family party of Spotted Flycatcher a week or so ago. Twitched the Glossy Ibis down the road at...

    Suffolk Birding

Had my best day out of the autumn so far with three new birds for the county, in the shape of Long-tailed Skua and Sooty Shearwater at Thorpeness and a fantastic Lesser Grey Shrike at nearby Aldringham (fantastic find by Dave Fairhurst). This was backed by a pretty good second string of...

Seems a large fall has occurred all down the Suffolk coast of Wheatear, with the 100+ Cortonbirds saw and another 100+ at Landguard. A quick hour down at East Lane early evening inbetween rain showers showed the area was alive with birds for once: 20+ Yellow Wagtail with 2 Blue-headeds, both...
