    Suffolk Birding

The Rock Pipits were on the Gedgrave Marsh side of the Ore and we encountered them right on the corner where the public footpath running south east from the minor road meets the estuary wall where they were feeding. It is the first time in Suffolk that I have seen such a tight flock of Rock...

Also great to finally get Raven in East Anglia with the pair at Gedgrave this morning. It really was a perfect morning, being quiet, bright and still, with plenty of birds. The close one of the two Ravens was 'cronking' away and apart from these we also had two ringtail Hen Harriers, two Marsh...

I couldn't find the Greenish Warbler at Southwold sewage works this morning but there was still a Pied Flycatcher present. Several Chiffchaffs were also noted along with a couple of Reed Warblers and a Lesser Whitethroat on the common where two Swifts and a Yellow Wagtail flew over. The Reydon...

Birded the Shotley Peninsula today which if you work in a round robin kind of way starting at the Orwell Bridge stopping off at various points until you reach Shotley and then the Stour followed by Alton Water makes for a well-rounded and wildlife packed day. The area around the Orwell Bridge...

Nice selection of geese still on Southwold Town Marsh including four Tundra Bean, one White-fronted, five Brent and 22 Pink-footed. Purple Sand still north of pier and a Shag offshore drifting south. One ad Med Gull on the boating lake. Nicest moment of the day was while finishing off with a...

I was thinking along similar lines to you yesterday although I never thought about the dark smudges around the bill. The bird in question is the Ivory Gull and the year was 1999. As famous as the bird itself was the fact that it probably would have stayed into the new millenium if not for the...

The redpoll is undoubtably the best bird I've twitched this year. Used to seeing Arctic Redpolls several feet up trees half silhouetted in poor light giving myself neckache in the process. The complete opposite of that today and an absolutely stonkingly tame bird to boot and it literally flew to...

    Suffolk Birding

There was a good southerly movement of Stock Doves over Minsmere this morning, 175 in total including several 20+ flocks and over 500 Woodpigeons. Unfortunately I did'nt get there till 9.00. I think an hour earlier and I might have doubled or even trebled these figures. A very disorientated...

Holbrook / Shoteley Peninsula 14/2/12 Apart from popping along to Alton Water a couple of years ago, this was my first proper visit to this area and I found it very enjoyable. Because of the two massive estuarys flanking this area, it had a real island feel to it as I drove along between sites...

Redhead Letter Day! What a cracking days birding I had in the Waveney valley today. It was one of those rare days when I made all the right decisions and everything fell into place beautifully. Easily the best winters days birding I've ever had in the Waveney valley and one of the best in...

Blyth Estuary / Southwold 31/1/12 There were a good few Avocets on the Blyth Estuary this morning with around 280 counted + 12 Bar-tailed Godwits, 35 Black-tailed Godwits, 56 Curlew, 850 Dunlin, 130 Redshank, three adult Yellow-legged Gulls, 42 LBB Gulls, and around 1200 Common Gulls. A little...

    Suffolk Birding

Sea-watching off Southwold this morning between 0730-1030 produced a nice southerly movement of Dunlin totalling c500 birds and other totals included 84 Knot, 21 Bonxies, three smaller skuas (probably Arctic) 66 Brent Geese, 10 Common Scoter, two each of Sanderling, Goldeneye, Grey Heron, and...

Lowestoft 11/10/11 It doesn't have the same rarity clout as the Sandhill Crane but for me, yesterdays cracking little Woodchat Shrike will still be vying for my favourite bird of the year. Full of charisma, combining the cutesiness of a Teletubbie with the stealth and hunting ability of a...

Walberswick 18/09/11. Looks like I should have gone to Minsmere yesterday by the look of the previous post but instead I opted for Walberswick where the highlights noted in and from the reedbeds were 2 Hobbies, 3 Common Buzzards, 6 Marsh Harriers, Water Rail, Cetti's Warbler, Reed Warbler...

Thanks for the compliment. Suffolk is such a great birding county and there are a lot of top birders living there, so wouldn't it be great if just a handfull more could spend a few minutes after their day out and go on here and give the Suffolk thread the acknowledgement and coverage it deserves. ;)

North Warren Marsh 11/09/11 Continual scanning for over an hour from the public footpath dividing the two halves of this marsh eventually produced four Whinchats - lovely birds and always a pleasure to see - and four Hobbies (at least one of these was a juvenile bird being fed by its parent). A...

    Suffolk Birding

Was very pleased to get my first ever Suffolk spring record of Pomarine Skua with a pale-phase spooned-up adult past Southwold at 3.20 this afternoon. Even though it was pretty distant the spoons were clearly visible giving the bird a very attenuated rear-end look which was quite distinctive.

What a superb photo! The most Bitterns I've seen together was two in flight at the Hen Reedbeds but to get three on the ground. Amazing!!!

WBC Dawn Chorus Walk 22/04/11 A Waveney Bird Club organised dawn chorus walk around South Elmham Hall produced most of the regular breeding species plus a couple of real surprises! We started at 6am to the sound of a Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming and this was soon followed by the first of...

    Suffolk Birding

Southwold 17/04/11 Started at the boating lake and there were an impressive amount of Sedge Warblers singing from the reedbed. A thorough count between there and the bridge produced 37 singing males. Pretty good for a relatively small area. Also, on the lake were four Med Gull and at nearby...

Two trips, two Red Kites After seeing a Red Kite during my last visit into Suffolk at Walberswick I was very pleased to get another on my next trip with one flying west over Dunwich Forest on 1st April. A few Siskins were scattered around Dunwich village and a brief scan out to sea produced...

    Suffolk Birding

Walberswick 29/03/11 Parked near the common and began a circular walk taking in this area, the beach and some of the marshes. First notable sighting was a flock of c250 Black-tailed Godwits circling in the distance over the Blyth Estuary. Two Cetti's Warblers heard but otherwise fairly quiet on...
