    Suffolk Birding

This thread has been as quiet as the area recently. Last Sunday my other half and I walked from Leathes Ham to Oulton Broad. We managed to get distant views of the Great Northern Diver and Guillemot from the railway bridge but the only other interesting bird was a Common Sandpiper at Mutford...

Purple Sandpipers I finally caught up with my first Purple Sandpipers of the autumn at Ness Point, Lowestoft this lunchtime. I believe seven of them have been reported but I only managed to find two feeding with the Turnstones before it started spitting with rain again. Good to see them back. Ron

Thanks James. That is brilliant. Ron

I don't know if Cortonbirds or anybody else can help me. I see there have been reports of good numbers of various thrushes at Hopton disused railtrack in the past few days. Are these seen from the road or is it possible to walk along the railtrack? If so, how does one gain access to it? I...

I like the story about the rescued juvenile Purple Heron in the 'Recent News' section of the Lounge Lizard website here. Ron

There was loads of Terns at north Lowestoft yesterday evening. I counted over 100 on three groynes near the Links Hill car park, mostly Common with a few Sandwich amongst them. I didn't have my scope with me to pick out anything different. Ron

Yesterday I spent a couple of hours at Carlton Marshes and was shocked to see the damage caused by last Sunday's fires. The reedbeds have been wiped out on the Spratts Water side of the drainage channel but, hopefully, they will soon regenerate. There were plenty of singing warblers in the trees...

    Suffolk Birding

Two Black Redstarts were around the net posts and caravan park railings at Lowestoft North Denes this morning, although rather elusive at times. Ron

I haven't been that way for about a week Gavin but I have seen Chiffchaffs in Flycatcher Alley several times this winter. Three were reported at Lowestoft North Denes on the 23rd, according to the Lounge Lizards site. Could it be one of them or do you think it is something more interesting? Ron

I had my best ever views of a Water Rail at Oulton Broad this afternoon. This extremely confiding individual was feeding in the open amongst the Mallards about 2-3 metres away from me, apparently completely unfazed by my presence. Every so often it seemed to realise where it was and sprinted...

Desert Wheatear I went for a walk on Lowestoft North Denes this morning to see if there was anything about, when I noticed a few scopes near the promenade. When I went to investigate I lucked into the Desert Wheatear. A gorgeous, extremely confiding little bird, posing in perfect conditions...

I finally managed to make contact with a Purple Sandpiper at Ness Point today, the first one I have seen this autumn. It was decidedly cool there in the north easterly wind! Ron

No sign of yesterday's Yellow-browed Warbler at Leathes Ham this morning but a female Goldeneye was giving good views despite the poor light. Ron

According to BINS, seven of them were on North Marsh today. You have probably spotted that already, though. Ron

    Suffolk Birding

A bit of a novelty at Ness Point today was two Brent Geese feeding in the turbine yard. Most of yesterday's arrivals seemed to have dispersed this morning. There were four Wheatears around the net posts along with loads of Meadow Pipits and the R B Shrike put in an appearance but, apart from a...

Thanks Jonny. I think it was probably a bumblebee. I went have another look today and it was still there, feeding well. It looks as if it has a wasp in this photo. You could see it wiping it on the twig, presumably to remove the sting. Ron

I finally had the chance to look for the juvenile Red-backed Shrike at Lowestoft today. It was showing well this morning outside the Birdseye factory, although the light was very poor in the mist. I watched it for about an hour and it was still there when I left. A beautiful little bird. Ron

I parked at Corton church this morning and spent a pleasant couple of hours wandering around the old sewage works, the disused railway line and the new sewage works (all much more attractive than it sounds.) I didn't see anything particularly exciting but two Buzzards floating around above the...

There were about six Whinchats on North Denes, Lowestoft yesterday afternoon, although they were very mobile and dotted about, which made counting them difficult. They also didn't like being approached! There were also still two Wheatears at the net posts, one of them being an extremely obliging...

    Suffolk Birding

I spent a couple of hours in north Lowestoft on Friday. There were still at least four Wheatears around the net drying posts and I had some nice close views of them in the sunshine. After much searching I eventually found a rather distant Whinchat near Gunton Warren and it even had a bit of...

I counted seven Wheatears around the net drying posts in Lowestoft this evening and one in the turbine enclosure. Lovely stuff. Ron

Thank you. I hope you have you got your Ringed Plover year tick now. I saw three of them on the breakwater at Ness Point yesterday. Ron

    Suffolk Birding

Thanks James. I started off by walking along the west path and had good views across the scrape with the sun behind me in the morning. That was where I saw the Ringed Plovers. I have seen Grasshopper Warblers there in the past but this time I had to make do with the large numbers of Reed and...

    Suffolk Birding

I have been to Carlton Marshes three times in the past week. The place looks stunning at this time of the year in the sunshine. There were warblers singing all over the reserve - Willow, Cetti's, Common Whitethroats, Chiffchaffs, Sedge and Reed (although I am finding these very timid at the...

I finally got round to having a look at the Snow Buntings at Pakefield on Sunday. There was a flock of over 50 birds feeding on the beach, although they were rather mobile. This was not helped by the number of inquisitive dogs bounding about. They are well worth a look if you are in the area. Ron
