The last place (and time) I saw water voles in Worcs was 2006 or 2007, along the canal by Tardebigge boat yard. Sandwell Valley had a fairly good population along the river upstream from the visitors centre. I would imagine they were also present in the marshy areas both sides of the Tame...

I beg thousand pardons if wrong but did wonder if it was a bank vole. I've seen them by the broad meadow during work parties and from the west hide. Bank voles are also plump......yes, I know. Size wise, bank vole 9.5-10.5 cms, tail length 3.5-7 cms. water vole 15-22 cms, tail 9-14 cms. brown...

Water voles are quite plump and rounded, with chubby cheeks and the head is round and proportionally large ...........yes, I know. Rats have narrow, pointed features. In water, all of the upper body is above the surface (from memory) and whenever they dive a 'plop' should be heard. They also...

Stayed till late but again no sign of the barn owl. Boardwalk is OK but the Hen Brook was continuing to rise and was only a few centimetres below the footbridge.

Moors..........brief sighting of the bittern by the dead willows. Two green woodpeckers and a greater spot along the west track. Fifty plus redwings and fieldfares in the meadow by the seasonal pool. Good numbers of pochard and shoveler. Cetti's heard and then seen from the Bittern Hide. Two...

No but the light wasn't that good. Saw the grebes about 4.10 pm. The three great crests were seen flying in by another observer. This was around 3.30 pm.

Happy Christmas to all associated with UW, wardens, volunteers, birders and photographers. Hope 2014 brings what you wish for. For me, common crane and honey buzzard. A rough legged would be fine way to start the new year. My prediction for 2014 is a cattle egret. My other two wishes...

A lot of highlights but seeing the cuckoo being fed by the reed warblers stands out. Have been birding over 30 years and had never seen that before; and to be so close. Technically not UW but seeing a couple otter cubs at Webbs.

Thanks for that. Did you see the BBC4 documentary about twitchers? Very similar to the article. Think it was called 'A Peculiarly British Obsession?'

Was being deliberately vague because one site had a pair of curlew throughout the summer, although there was no evidence of breeding. A pair turned up last year but again there was no attempt to breed. Also, was referring to the area south of where I live.

Flashes..........common snipe by the feeders and female peregrine overhead.

Knew of several sites in North Worcestershire where they were breeding. Last known pair was in 1996. Likewise lapwing. Last 'local' record was in 1998. Don't know whether these birds joined the summer or winter roost at Upton but so sad to see so many farmland and wetland species disappear...

A couple of hours spent at the Moors, west hide yesterday pm. Goldeneye, at least 2 cettis, one calling from the Broadmeadow, the other active in the reeds by the feeders. Starlings and pied wagtails still going into roost 4.45.

Flashes A clear still sky, quite light until late, meant the evening roost could be observed for about an hour and a half: 25 black headed gulls; 8 teal, 22 coots, 11 curlew, 3 pied wagtails, 2 common snipe, 400 plus redwings and fieldfares, 1 mistle thrush heard. 550 starlings. Main flock...

Thanks. Have seen both species on the reserve this year. In September, there was a Daubenton's hawking insects on the Sailing Pool. This was hunting late afternoon, which is unusual. They tend to fly low over the water. I usually see noctules on the Moors. We obviously get pipistrelle but...

Could be a noctule. They are quite big; body length about 8cms and a 35cms wingspan. Daubenton's are smaller.

Pied wagtails..............several flocks flew in around half an hour before dusk. Main party numbered about 170 and were quite restless, spending a lot of time on the islands in front of the east hide. Combined total was about 250 pied wagtails. Some roosted in the reeds by the Broadmeadow...

On Friday, pied wagtails roosted in the reeds directly in front of the bittern hide. Just an idea but wondering about a synchronised pied wagtail roost count? Earlier in the week, saw about 150 going into roost at Webbs. Friday, saw approximately the same number roosting in reeds. Did go...

Best wishes for Dave W. Hope you are OK. A few days rest and you'll be able to catch up reading your back copies of The Guardian. Moors (east hide) mid afternoon to late afternoon..........1 jack snipe; 3 reported earlier. Common snipe, 2 grey wagtails, little grebe, several grey herons but...
